My 200tdi is getting a bit slow, especially on hills. I want to have a go at getting some more power back. I have just changed the air filter and reset the valve clearances which did make an improvement.

So what should I do next? Next steps are likely to be:

- Checking air/turbo pipes for problems
- cleaning intercooler
- change fuel filter

Is there anything else obvious I should be doing?

only thing you can do other than making sure the engine is in good running order is fit a large intercooler and turn up the fueling

a bit slow compared to what?..what mileage has it done,a service would be the 1st thing

Compared to itself and what it used to be like. 75 used to be fine on the motorway - now it only makes 70. There are hills that it used to deal with OK that it struggles with now. I changed the gearbox this year for re-con and i think I ended up with a lower ratio 5th which would explain the speed issue, but I am surprised at how gutless it is now on a hill.

A full service would be a good idea - its a fair cop...

Or swap it for a good ol fashioned vee eight!! ;)

Tut Tut!,

V8's old hat compared t modern diesels. V8s are dying a death nowdays when it was once the conversion to do.

Anyway from experience most landy people buy some old shagged Vitesse engine and bodge it into their old landy and think its wonderful cos its better than their old shagged out 2.25/2.5 whatever. Usually they are found at pay and play days quoting massive BHP cos they have fitted some high lift camshaft they got second hand when theirs is probably only running on 5 or 6 cylinders sounding rough anyway (which they think is great and how a V8 should sound). Usually noisy and running like ****e oh and their oil filter is half burried in the front axle cos the never bothered to re-locate it oh and when they get stuck its their tyres, or they wern't going fast enough, or its because they have drowned their engine is a wee puddle making their 6 cylinder into 2. They get all upset when a standard diesel disco on road going 205's drive through nice and slowly and shouts to them do you need a tow? Frantically spraying WD40 everywhere they spend all teheir time trying to get the 6 cylinders going again.

I admit a well looked after V8 sounds lovely and there is no doubt that I want one buit only if it comes with a company fuel card!

Service your TDI, give it a new cambelt if you havent fitted one recently,

Clean out the intercooler and all the normal things to get it back to it should be then take a look on Google for fueling and turbo mods be aware that this done incorrectly can damage your engine and then your pocket. The yanks (we love em) have played with their diesels with good reported results:
I will include a link that I believe was most helpful and details as to what and exactly how to do without comprimising engine life too much.

Turning up the pre 94 Ram diesel injector pump

Only do this if you think you need the extra power after cleaning the intercooler and checking the engine is in good health. Its down to you if you tweek things anything goes worng it will be your own fault. Jai

True,

By modern Diesel engines I was refering to the new Landrover/BMW V8 lovley to drive my boss had one and i got to drive it for a while

yeah all the new stuff is good. The TDV8 is an amazing engine, to drive it you'd never think it was a diesel!
The petrols are good too but just so expensive to run!
As for the new defender engine and box, well theyre just poo!

Must admit Ive not driven the new defender yet was under the impression that the 2.8 was great but i'll leave that untill i drive one. Must ask for a drive next time I'm up that way. My Gf Step mum works for my local LR dealer so she can usually swing it for me. Jai

Update: I finally got my power back!

I went for cleaning out the intercooler. Whilst I was taking things apart I found the rubber connection into the inlet manifold was loose. It must have been like this since I changed the gearbox in the summer. When I put everything back together properly, it runs like a different engine. There was quite a lot of dirt in the intercooler, so that may have made a difference as well.

It was struggling to make 70 - now it makes 80+ no problem and feels a lot tighter all round.

Thanks to Buster for his photo tour on doing this - very useful.

Next will be the cambelt, but I might leave this to an expert.
