hello
I have fitted new modular wheels and tyres to the freelander but cant seem to get them balanced correctly,
they were delivered to me balanced but were horrendous couldnt go above 50mph. The local tyre services rebalanced them and they were a bit better i lived with it for a bit and had them checked again but still at speed there is a bad wobble.
i gave up on them today and put the old steel wheels on if only to eliminate any issue with the landy and it drives great, rock solid at any speed.
im sending them back
onyone else had this issue?

Modulars aren't hub-centric so the problem you described is very likely.
I wouldn't fit a wheel that isn't hub-centric myself. Studs aren't enough to keep the wheels fitted to the hub.

they do fit over the central hub neatly, seems strange that they are so bad to balance, they weren't second hand

Do the wheels actually touch the hub's spigot? From memory modulars have a larger hole then the hub needs to a tight fit.
Unless the wheel is perfectly centred, the wheel will feel out of balance.

If you find out exactly what the centre hole is you can buy spiggot rings to make them fit properly. I bought a set for some alloys that came on my car but were something like 1.7mm over sized. There are loads on ebay for only a few quid.

Edit. You'll also need the correct wheel nuts for modulars. The nuts for alloys are not suitable.

Having just dismantled the whole back axle on a Freelander - hubs, suspension, shafts & diff - I was amazed at how simple it all is.

Then you guys comer along and show how complex it is just to bolt a wheel on the car!

yes nuts and centres are all correct i already had steel wheels on but i do have wheel spacers on the front that hold them out from the centre a little . that might make some difference, ill try that as i would rather keep this wheels if possible

fixed it ! it was the spacers! thinking about Nodge68 s comment about centres, the wheels went over the centres very neatly but without the spacers they tighten right down over the centre now. (ive said centres too much )
took it a run and not a wobble to be had !!!
brilliant thanks guys now its an email to the wheel providers to apologise

Glad its sorted.
I did think it might have been the tires as mine was shaking its back end like a excited puppy when I fitted a set of AT's for the winter .
I refitted the standard "summer" boots and all is good ,although rotating front to back brings back the shake time for a complete new set methinks!
