Hi folks,
I recently bought a Freelander 2 i6 and it had been mostly fine except for a slightly rough idle and some bearing/scraping noises in the engine. After a bit of research on common issues I decided the scraping could be coming from the alternator coupling which can come lose so I pulled off the manifold and alternator and investigated. It wasn't lose but I tightened it just in case and put everything back together.
After that it started making a horrible grinding/ scraping noise, mostly when in reverse but also when coasting. I have pulled everything apart again to see if I reassembled something incorrectly but everything seems ok. The only thing I have noticed is that the shaft the drive pulley for the alternator is connected to has a lot of play in it - I can wobble the pulley around even when it is as tight as possible.
My issue is I can't find any information about bearings or anything beyond that pulley itself. Does anyone have any idea why that shaft should be so lose and what I should do about it? E.g. what bearings might be involved or where to find them or what is going on inside here
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
For extra context I'm in Australia and the local Landrover mechanic can't get to it for a couple of months.
Thanks in advance,
Ash
