Your problem is the auto bit there always crap on fuel my mate has a manual thats doing 31mpg that drops to 25/6mpg towing it is unmoded

Bit of an exaggeration that, the difference is usualy less than 10% between most auto and manual versions of the same vehicle.

Official figures:
300tdi Man: 28mpg Auto:27mpg
TD5 Man: 30mpg Auto:28mpg
4.0 V8 Man: 17mpg Auto:16mpg

Well my stock '93 200 2.5TD Disco gets on average 27-31MPG. 27 when I drive like a bad outta hell (rev to redline before shifting up) and 31 when I drive like a granny (shifting at dead on 3,000RPM).

So the official figures are 27mpg for a 300TDi auto... interesting.

I get about 25mpg with 148,000 miles on the clock. Maybe I shouldn't be too depressed!

It's interesting that the difference between driving like a maniac and a granny is only around 2 mpg at most for me! Doesn't make that much difference.

I had a TDi 30 auto EDC a couple of years back. Did about 16,000mls in just over a year and she averaged 33mpg throughout the whole period.

i get between 20 and 22 mpg on a 93 200tdi manual with 140 on the clock and i don't drive that agressive. where did my extra 10 mpg go? :(

that's ****e mate, I get about 25mpg from my 93 200tdi manual with mud tyres, and about 30mpg with road tyres.

How often do you service? I do mine quite often (at least 2-3 times a year depending on mileage).

Thats because ford's suck :)

Well, you say that... I'm a sad bugger, so I can tell you the following about the cars I (and my friends) have owned:

1996 BMW 318ti (1.9l petrol) - 33mpg average
1998 Ford Mondeo (1.8l petrol) - 35mpg average
???? Hyundai Lantra (1.6l petrol) - 33mpg average
Vauxhall Vectra (1.8l petrol) - 33mpg average
1997 Land Rover Discovery (2.5l turbo diesel) - 24mpg average

The above figures are based on *real* petrol/diesel pump fill-up values over long periods (summer and winter).

Somehow, your Landy (and other people's too!) gets the same mpg as essentially a sub-2-litre petrol saloon car!

I really, truly, would love to know how...

That's quite a big difference... i do have tyres slightly more aggressive than standard all-terrains. Maybe that's where quite a lot of my MPG is going!

Just to follow your example here are a few cars that we've owned and their mpg:

'93 Disco TDi 200 manual - 36 daily, 40 on a run, best ever 47

'98 Disco TDi 300 manual - 33 daily, 36 on a run

'98 Disco TDi 300 auto - 30 daily, 36 on a run

2002 Disco TD5 auto - 29 daily, 35 on a run

'98 Disco TD5 auto - 30 daily, 36 on a run

All my vehicles I service myself. I work on them regularly, replacing oil and filters at much smaller service intervals than LR recommend and I'm committed to using fully synthetic oils in the engine and drivetrain. I run the tyres at 2.2bar front and 2.6bar rear. The brakes are never allowed to drag and I drive in line with the Advanced Motorists style - yes I am an old man :D:D

I am getting around 25-30mpg on my 300tdi 1994 ES, mixed driving BUT i can get 55mpg out of my Mondeo, I drive the landy more because the ford is as boring as plain cream crackers! The landy is fun to drive and the reason i bought the disco is because i could not handle the 12-15mpg of a series 3 anymore.

I think the differences between discos are mainly down to fuel pump settings, injector condition and driving styles.

OK... so i think this proves that there is either something wrong with how I'm driving *or* one of us is calculating MPG incorrectly. I can't think of any other reason why I consistently get crap MPG and others consistently get excellent MPG on all the vehicles we have ever owned.

47 mpg on a 200tdi????? I know that was at best, but it's almost implausible!

So... my "efficient" driving involves pushing the accelerator down only a small amount and changing up while in the "optimal" torque range. I can't think of a better way to drive than that. No excessive revving, no fast accelerating, and no straining on the engine.

As for long distance, there's no way to drive more or less efficiently on long distance, as long as you keep your right foot in exactly the same place for as long as possible.

So... unless my above driving technique is wrong, one of us is calculating MPG incorrectly... surely?!?!?!?

I have only had it two weeks and was told it was serviced a month before, but to be honest im wondering after reading several posts im wondering if the guy i bought it off may have been telling porky pies. Its my first landy and my previous car was a 1.6 8v petrol vitara and that only did around 25 mpg so i wasn texpecting the landy to do any more.

service it is then, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter anything else? o help improve the mpg? its on on at's as well so no agressive mud terains or anything like that

i used to get 45 to 50 mpg out of my na 1.8 pug 205 with no one else in and no extra weight other than myself. how do you ge 47 out of a car that is twice the weight twice the size and with twice the footprint with constant 4 wheel drive?

bet it was no fun being stuck behind you on single rack roads ;)

also clean out the sedimenter (do a search) and don't bother buying expensive oil, just buy universal tractor oil from your nearest farm suppliers and change it regularly. my 200tdi has 172k on the clock and runs better than a lot of newer disco's I know.
