As the title, 4lt of Magnatec oil in Halfords for only £17.50. I know some of you dont like either but thought some people may like to know. Also brought an oil filter (4.6 V8 engine) for only £4 using my trade card not bad as it should have been £8.49, and found out that the filters are made by unipart !

I'm not a fan of Castrol oil, none of it is proper synth, overpriced for what you get. Homeware chain "The Range" do Unipart branded oil (made by Fuchs so it's quality stuff) £19.95 for 5 litres of synth in various grades (including Ford and VW spec) or £14.99 for semi. Bargain of the century.

wots the price including carriage?

Obviously you ain't going to order a filter and pay carriage. Just an indication of how much they would be at a factors. With reasonable trade a lot less. Halfrauds bump the price of everything up. But from Island with his £5.00 postage OEM Coopers filter would be £7.98 incl vat. Less than the Halfrauds retail price. Not everybody who goes to Halfrauds has a trade card. As a matter of fact i would say anyone who is in the trade and uses Halfrauds is not plumb in the head.

I usually buy ten filters in cheap and sell them off cheapish if any one wants one. That way I get mine for nowt.:)

tiz horses for courses, Wammers.

Looking around the suppliers £2.25 plus vat seems to be it for a Coopers filter. With genuine Land rover being around the £5.45 mark plus vat. Probably made by Coopers anyway with a LandRover stamp on it. So anything between £3.00 and £6.50 for a filter. Eight pound and odds retail for Unipart, one of the cheaper filters is a bit of a **** take.

Cheers thanks for that last comment. Nice. Just thought some people would like to know. Never said they were the cheapest or the best. And you dont need to be in the trade directly to get a trade card. And surley to get trade discount at a factors you would need to prove your in the trade? So whats the difference between that and a trade card? My local factors close at 5.30 in the week, 1 on a sat and closed on a sunday! At least Halfords are open if your stuck. Oh and if you check the Asda link it says £26 for 4lt of Magnatec.

Looks like I have a screw loose then.:rolleyes::rolleyes::p

I prefer mineral engine oil in m RRCs....tried mag' in a RRC once n it didnt sound too good after a long run.

I get a lot of my oils n fluids from seller smith_and_allan . They ave an ebay shop with very reasonable carraige rates....and they pack stuff properly too.

I'm not connected with them. just a user, and would happily recommend them.

If your in the trade and doing retail work the customer picks up the tab, but you want your parts as cheap as possible. If you buy an £8.00 filter from Halfrauds and get 50% trade then charge the customer retail you make £4.00. If you buy the same filter from a factor at £2.98 less 35% you get it for £1.93 charge the Halfrauds price you make £6.07. Take your pick. If you're doing a job on your own car using Halfrauds is silly.

Or yu take yu customer into Halfrauds - get them to buy the bits on yo trade card, that way they think they have a good deal and yu dont have to worry about VAT or it going thru yo books. Yu just charge labour (which is cash) and nothing shows on your books. :p

anyway - this discussion is futile - I cant see Stratstones popping into Halfrauds for a gallon of oil.

Is there any real difference in quality between the various makes? My local factor stocks Mahle which I have used until I bought one of those service kits off ebay. Everything in the kit (including sprk plugs) came with a Britpart tag and was pretty good value for money. It has all been fitted (except the spark plugs) and is due a change in the next week or so. Would be nice to know if there is a difference between the two manufacturers.

I've used Comma enhanced mineral 20/50 or 15/40, dependant on the mileage, in my last two classics without any problems & the API SL (for the 15/40 - can't remember the 20/50) exceeds LR's SF spec by a comfortable margin. It was £13 for 5 litres back in '08 but I'll probably cough when I buy again shortly!

Naughy boy that is illegal. How about paying cash at the factors then charging Halfrauds prices and getting the customer to pay cash. That's devious. :D:D:D

With the price of liquid gold at the moment and if I'm not passing a spares place but making a specific journey to them, and its over a 10 mile return journey, its cheaper to get the things sent to me anyway:eek:

And when I look at it like that I do wonder why I'm still driving around in the bloody thing!!!

not sure on the qulity of unipart filter my self , mechanic who shall remain nameless supplied me with three at my request for use over the next few years on the 72 rrc.

they of course didnt fit as they were for post 76 engines. I fitted one after another to my 1990 classic and watched the oil light take 10 secs to go out. put a coopers one on and it went out straight away. Same with the next 3 coopers fitlers till I sold it.

They are still in my gargae full of new oil!

So I have to say in my opinion unipart are ****, especially for filters!

Can I ask how we know that unipart oil is made by Fuchs?

Unipart used to be very good, it was the spares arm of British Leyland until it's demise, then was privatised. They used to make a lot of their own parts. Think they still have some manufacturing plants in Europe but i don't think they are motoring related, would think they import minor stuff like filters. As far as motor parts are concerned think they maybe just a distributor rather like Britpart. But don't quote me on that.

I worked for a large oil company years ago, we analysed about 30 competitors' products before developing our own fully-synth, the Unipart oil and Fuchs Titan was obviously identical so we dropped one of them from the test, as was Castrol and Halfords. This was quite a few years ago, they could have changed suppliers since I suppose - however the Unipart oil still looks and smells like the Fuchs I remember. Castrol got the rules changed as to what can be called synthetic so their brews could be called synthetic (yeah right) check out the cold-pour points which don't lie - I'd rather put Unipart oil in my car! Most oils performed very similarly with a few under-performing, only one oil stood out - head and shoulders above the rest - Mobil One. Obviously I can't go into too many details as the company could sue me for divulging their data!
