I am very much new to Disco 2 myself. Only owned for 2 months and had the' m&s' lights.
Advice I used, must have a good battery,by good I mean good. This helped
Also, switching the engine off and on a few times can help.
And, cycle through the gears a number of times can help.
Been OK now for a couple of weeks, but quite nerve wracking every time you switch on watching the lights
Love my Disco 2.

Cheers

Yes it's worth looking at the batt . I had lots of start up probs with my m & s lights. And a duff batt . The brain for the auto box is very touchy about having the right power on start up and if a bit low goes into safe mode . Do you get the lights on on start up . Or do they come on while driving . Why not try starting up with it hooked up to another car with jump leads and see if it comes up . And I to always run my box through the gears after starting and always turn off everything electric before getting out so nothing else takes power for the next start up . I bet a lot of owners on here have all sorts of funny customs

CAN fault is about the datalink between the engine ECU(ECM) and transmission (EAT)ECU...the CAN signal comes from the ECM red plug so oil ingress there (which is common) could affect it, Check the EAT ECU plug too(eventually give it a contact spray) you can also check the continuity of the wires, not very common but could happen to be an interruption somewhere... if everything is ok in this area IMO you need a new/known good EAT ECU...read this:
Controller Area Network (CAN) system

The CAN system is a high speed serial interface between the ECM and the Electronic Automatic Transmission (EAT)
ECU. The CAN system uses a data bus to transmit information messages between the ECM and the EAT ECU.
Because there are only two components in this CAN system, one will transmit information messages and the other
will receive information messages, and vice-versa.
The CAN system is used by the EAT ECU and the ECM for the following:
l Gearshift torque control information.
l EAT OBD information.
l MIL request.
l Vehicle speed signal.
l Engine temperature.
l Engine torque and speed.
l Gear selected.
l Gear change information.

The CAN system uses a twisted pair of wires to form the data bus to minimise electrical interference. This method of
serial interface is very reliable and very fast. The information messages are structured so that each of the receivers
(ECM or EAT ECU) is able to interpret and react to the messages sent.
The CAN data bus is connected directly between pin 32 of connector C0158 of the ECM and pin 44 of connector
C0193 at the EAT ECU, and pin 35 of connector C0158 of the ECM and pin 16 of connector C0193 at the EAT ECU.

The CAN system can fail in the following ways:
l CAN data bus wiring open circuit.
l CAN data bus wiring short circuit.
In the event of a CAN data bus failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
l EAT defaults to reverse and 4th gear if the vehicle is moving, 3rd gear if the vehicle is stationary.
l Harsh gearshifts.
l Sport and manual warning lamps flash alternately.

Before you spend too much time on anything else, charge up the battery.

No, it probably doesn't make sense, but it does work !!!

...off course the battery thing is the first on the list... what i wrote is for the case when it happens with good battery too
