hey guys, ive been suffering with the following problem for about 6mnth,

i have a 91 discovery1 300tdi automatic, and heres the problems ive had.

1. trouble starting, alot.
2. going up hill is shockingly slow. around 30-40mph
3. on flat i can get to 70mph, then i if i ease off accelerator it gears up and slowly chuggers on at that speed, if i move my foot even a little bit it gears stright back down and doesnt let me go on anyfaster.

i thought it mite be the injector loom problem but ive now been told that only happens on td5s.

if anyone has experienced these problems before and could shead any light on the matter please do,
thankyou.
sam

have you checked for air leaks to turbo etc?
is it a 300, 1991? what trouble you having when starting?
have you checked the usual stuff there? glow plugs, lift pump, air leaks etc?

i replaced the turbo and intercooler pipes a few weeks back as it ceased on me, it had the same problem before and still after, im going to replace the heater plugs, and fuel filter at the weekend. its just the gearing down that worrys me. and low power uphill

i think it is a 91 model, cud be 94 im not 100% sure.

change the fuel filter. Clean out the fuel sedimenter. Remove and blank the EGR valve. Flush the intercooler out. Try driving again. Any better?

ive changed the fuel filter. not sure wat the sedimenter actually is., egr is blanked. intercooler been flushed when i changed the turbo., need to try and find the sedimenter.

the sedimentor is an ali catch tank about the shape and size of a tin of beans, it is on the chassis on the rear drivers side, you will know what it is when you have a look.
it will have little plastic drain plug in the bottom, DO NOT TOUCH THIS THEY BREAK ;) plus if its full of **** it wont come out the ruddy hole anyway.. there is if i remember right a 11mm nut at the top of the sedimentor that holds it together, undo that and separate it but get sumat under to catch the diesel you spill, clean it out and and refit with a new rubber seal, be carefull not to damage fuel lines too. its a peice of cake to do and well worth the short time it takes. mine was full of sludgy crap and glad i did it, 1 tip i did when refitting was to fill the bowl up with diesel to allow less air in the system..

The fuel sedimenter is a filter-looking device which collects any water and debris in the fuel.

It is located just inside the rear wheel, bolted to the chassis rail. To take it off you need an 11mm spanner, undo the central fixing bolt accessed from the top of the unit (feel around 'til you find it), undo the bolt, have an ice cream tub or similar to catch any loose diesel, remove the bowl and be amazed at what's in there.

I've seen less wildlife on the telly than in a sedimenter bowl !!! Clean out the bowl, replace and hopefully all your problems will be solved.

Put in a new air filter, they need loads of air. and they only cost about £3. I change all the filters on ours every 6,000mls - filter kit (oil, air & fuel) costs £6.28+vat from Paddocks.

thanks for that mate, i will check it out tomoro, need to get a bleedin filter now for it, theres no were close to get landy bits at all and it takes ages to find stuff around here lol.

thankyou very much. !:)

What you describe apart from the starting sounds like my own 300 tdi auto and my m8's 300 tdi auto. My 300 tdi wont go over 70 mph for love or money and slow downs on hills on motorways and d/c ways although not quite to the extent you seem to be experiencing. It starts first time every day though. All kickdown seems to do is burn more fuel and doesnt actually feel like it is making it pick up speed when you use it on the hills.

Mine has had an aiisport cooler and chip, ITG panel filter, Silicone hoses, Sed cleaned out, new lift pump, new fuel filter and a good service - done £112k with fsh

Of course what doesnt help me is a big roof rack and fitting 265/75/16 tyres, winch bumpers and off road protection killed the acceleration. But then I drove my m8's 300 tdi auto without the mods I have done to my engine and his sucked worse so I am beginning to wonder if its just the way the vehicles are.

Besides in a vehicle weighing that much with the handling do you really wanna go over 70 mph - mines scary enough at 60 on an A road

Hi there SB, but just like you I have nowhere close to my house that supplies bits, so I buy them from: www.paddocksspares.com who deliver to my door.

Filter Kit - Disco 300TDI

I normally order a bunch of bits at one go and include two or three filter kits as well. Their delivery is cheap and very fast. For you in England it's probably 2 days and over £50 it's free, under £50 it's a £5. Better than hunting round I reckon !!!

Good luck

Dave

I've done a few cheap mods on mine but the biggest success by far was replacing the catted downpipe for a non-cat one, really made all the difference.

Now she's relatively quick on acceleration (for a 2 ton brick!!) and will easily hold speed on hills. When I use kickdown you really know about it.

Fastest I've been in her to date is about 90mph (on the clock) and I know what you mean about scary!! but 70 is all day cruising speed no hassle at all.

Lol I forgot to say its got a SS 1 box 2.5 Inch decatted exhaust.

Sounds like my landy sucks or the iron mongery hanging off it is strangling it

MMMmm 70 mph and struggling
mines always been able to sit at 90 but slows down up hill, it just gets there quicker now with the mods. but i aint got no off road heavy metal on mine lol.. have you checked the turbo with a guage? should be about 1 bar if i remember.. and sb have you tried adjusting the cable to the box on the pump its got step holes in? worth a try to see if it holds the gears.. i think thats what it does:eek: could be wrong though lol

Chucks out loads of black fumes under load / kickdown

Getting 18-20 mpg around town

How would I go around checking the boost without taking it to a garage ?
