Hi all
Ive owned my Discovery 1 (96) for 2 months now and recenlty started doing a bit of off roading on a sunday, basic stuff really a few woods bit of rough track etc, its all good fun and freindly until recently when a Shogun owner appeared and started mouthing off about his Shogun Animal beats anything its up against, he seems to know a bit what hes talking about and his machine has all the bells and whistles under the sun.

As im new to the 4x4 world i just keep silent as im in no position to challenge him and theres only a few of us Disco guys there with little experience to shut him up.

he never goes off road in it, he just stands there with his machine highly polished and gleaming, so is his Mitsubishi Shogan Animal that much of a better machine then the TDI 300 or should we tell him hes full of ****

i bet if one or two of the Landy experts were there he wouldnt be so gobby.

its an automatic V6 3.5 if that means anything

Regards

Jay

the fact that he dunt off road it means he is full of **** , spray some mud on it when hes not looking.

tell him to put up or shut up - invite him on a laning trip - just make sure its lanes with lots of scratchy bits - and just watch him cry :D

why would you buy something called an 'animal' anyways?
or a 'warrior'?
unless of course your a dick.:D

i thought of asking him to join us or shut up but like i said as im new to the off roading thing im still trying to get to grips with the wet grass and mud and didnt want to end up embarasing myself if i got stuck and he manages to get through.

Im having a bit of trouble understanding the diff lock and what it should be best used for.

ive tried a few grassy slopes in low ratio but maybe im not experienced enough as the Disco slips and wheel spins and i panic and rev back (what i chicken)

west country, bath

Allow me to recommend North Somerset Land Rover Club. We're a friendly bunch that hold a pub night each month and laning days most months. The next meeting is on Tuesday 11th September so why not pop along and say hello?

You can find details at North Somerset Land Rover Club

Maybe see you there :)

Sorry for the blatant club plug, everyone, but this nice, discerning, Discovery owning person sounds like they need some friendly guidance and advice.

well **** me. another NSLRC member. jay kay. im east of Bristol. if you and the boys want to meet up and bring this ****er along, i will show you some good lanes :D we get him right stuck with his leaf sprung lengthy piece of ****.

... and leave him there?

Evening Griff :)

i hadnt thought of that :) great idea. no, the ramblers would complain and it would make a mess not good for trying to keep the byways open. id winch him out very very slowely. the shame, the shame!

dont think we have met steve. ive only been out on the laning days, havent made the pub meets yet. which reminds me, must email Colin about the Salisbury trip if its not full. you do much laning in the disco?

I thought we had met once, but I am probably wrong .. it's not unusual. I haven't been out in this one yet ... can't get the transfer lever to work  but my tame mechanic is gonna sort it when he replaces the rear crankshaft oil seal for me in a couple of weeks time. Then it'll be ready for the Derbyshire weekend - whoohoo :D

My previous Disco's were all dirtied up and this one won't be any different. It'll stay pretty standard though as it's used as a company vehicle during the week. It'll soon be time to start buying T-cut by the tanker full again

we might have. the faces change on every trip! i only joined back last sept/oct i think. didnt do any trips till this year though. my 90 is getting better. just got a M8000 Warn winch fitted :)

The Shogun Animal is the office boys 4x4, my mother has an old Pajero which is ok off road but my brother has a new Mitsubishi which will get stuck in a cow turd! They are not a very good product anymore, my brothers has alsorts of design flaws and is absolutely gutless and his is the tuned up one! The Landy's axle articulation is far superior to any Jap 4x4, the 300TDi is still used by the MOD in all the Land Rover Wolf's because of it's reliabity and field fixability. Zues timing gears are the only mod needed to these engines as they had a problem with timing belt alignment so get without the belt and never breakdown. You are armed with a great 4 wheel drive system which BMW bought LR for with no electronics on it and manual diff lock. There is no better product out of the crate that is better off road than a Land Rover, FACT. Ask him why he thinks his Mitsubishi is better off road than Land Rovers when every off road review ever has the LR ahead of anything off road. The fact he doesn't take it off road says that hes frightened to get stuck and make himself look like a ****er which he will do. You say he has all the bells and whistles, i bet they are just factory cosmetic accessories aren't they? Get some better tyres on your LR bud you wont need proper mud pluggers, just some good all terrain tyres and your grip will naturally improve. If your landie is struggling with wet grass you must have full road tyres on or something

Thanks for all the great help guys with this one, im learning more on a daily basis,

Just been to Quick Fit and got a price for 4 Dunlop ATs the ones currently on my disco (96-P) are standard road tyres and a bit worn they are 235/70 16s and the Quick Fit guy suggested AT 245/75 16s (a bit bigger all round i guess)will theses be ok or will there be any probs with wheels turning etc.

They qouted me £320 for the 4 all fitted and ready to go, seems a fair price, i know i could prob get them a cheaper off tinternet, but Quick Fit just down the road seems convenient.

So round two with this big head will be next sunday, ill try not to let the masses down, bit of practising first i think

I wouldn't let Kwik fit near my car mate as they will probably strip the threads on your wheel bolts as they fire them back on with the air gun @ 350NM, i'm surprised they didn't try and sell you some new brakes as well.

My Kwik fit have been good guys - they swapped all my or styres and got a replacement tube - fur £40 or so.
