Hi

I have seen a very nice disco 2 a 2001 y plate td5 es auto with 100k on the clock with leather etc it's from a dealer for 5400 is this a good price?

I going to look on sat am what should I be looking for ?

Is there anyone from around j30 m1 who may be able to go with me to look who knows what to look for?

Thanks lee

Pay close attention to the rear half of the chassis which can rust to buggery, bodyshells don't normally rot at all,if its an ES it will have air suspension and Ace,make sure it all works and that warning lights come on with ignition but go out when started.

Hi Lee, if it has full leather it's likely to be an ES. For that year and mileage I would expect to pay approx £3000 to £3500 - so you judge the value for money:D:D:D:D

For £3000-3500 you are at the bottom end and unlikely to get a car that won't have some issues, i spent £3000 and spent quite a bit more sorting it out! Prices are all over the place however privately you can get a decent example of that year for about £4000 upwards and from a dealer £5000 and up! Just be careful!

Don't expect lightening speeds unless it's been remapped. Price is quite high but it's a dealer so it would be a at the top end of the price range. Expect perfection and nothing else for that money

I would argue that they all have issues, irrespective of price. Which is why I would always advise paying less, leaving money for the eventual reparations.

Hi Lee, I would be having a care here. This is a 2001 (Y) reg vehicle, so a pre-facelift car, but it has a facelift front end. This means it has been modified by the current or previous owner.

Whilst it does look attractive, a 2001 TD5 is only worth about £3 to £3500 in private sale. Therefore if you buy this garage-sale car you have lost something like £2000 immediately - on day one !!!!!!!!!

When you come to sell at some stage in the future, it will be a private sale so not only have you lost the £2000 above, but there will be the normal depreciation as well. Keep it for say 3 yrs until 2015; the vehicle is now 14yrs old and it is likely to be worth £2 to £2500 at best.

So, in depreciation alone, over a three year period this car (if you bought it) would have cost you approx £3000 :eek:.

Why not try to find a 1999 or year 2000 TD5 for about £2500 (not hard at all to do), similar mileage (maybe slighter higher but of no consequence if looked after); and it will still be worth at least £1500 in three years time. Cost of ownership a grand tops!!!

Too many buyers simply ignore the effects of depreciation when buying cars, it will be, without doubt the single most important element in the "total cost of ownership" calculations.

Also bear in mind that we are heading for a period of ever increasing sensitivity towards fuel consumption and cost.

Have a TD5, enjoy your TD5, just don't pay through the nose for it, that's all.

Dave

Most of these are negotiable prices, so knock off at least 10%

I list these just to show that it can be done. Not all of them have the same spec, but this selection shows you can still buy a real facelift car for less than £3000!!!

The choice is yours.

I would generally agree with the "buy it cheap and budget for repairs" philosophy. However, I broke my own rule when I bought my X reg auto ES from a dealer (breaking my second rule) for nearly £6,000 3 years ago.

However, apart from normal service items it's only needed a SLS compressor, fuel pump, window regulators and rear wiper motor (plus odd relays etc) in the 21,000 miles since then - total cost well under £1,000.

So any rule isn't always valid.....

Sorry Ian, but if you were to add in the cost of depreciation over that three year period, your cost of ownership would look rather different.

As a private seller (ie without the back-up of garage facills and guarantees) your vehicle today would, if you chose to do so, fetch approx £3500.

That means that the depreciation cost element is two and a half times as much as the repairs cost.

Repairs - £1000

Dep. - £2500

Total - £3500.

IF you had purchased a tidy TD5 at £2500 3 yrs ago, spent a grand on repairs and sold it today for £2000; it would have cost you £1500 in total.

That's a comparison of £500 pa versus approx £1300 - £800 per year more!!!

Or, to put it another way, you would need to something like £1500pa gross to make up the difference.

Depreciation IS A BIG DEAL.

Dave

True but as I intend to keep the car for at least 10 years it will still probably be worth near £2000 at the end of that. That's more like £400 / year. Plus, when I was looking, the only TD5s I saw at much less than £5,000 were real dogs.

I do agree with what you say about depreciation which is one reason I've never bought a new vehicle in my life - I prefer other people to take the hit - but once they get over 10 years or so depreciation flattens out and condition becomes far more important.

I am aware of the pro's and con's from buying from a dealer.

I am also looking for a small run around for the wife and I have a 08 plate astra to px or sell.

Regards Lee

That sounds a tad condescending Lee. You asked for advice, you got advice now you say you know it all - so why ask if the price is OK?

If you've decided to buy that car then the best of luck to you - but please don't come the know-all - it's just not polite.
