I fancy the East coast route- the 800% carnet for egypt isnt much of a problem for my vehicle as it is only worth 2 grand-at most!!

I think the pros outweigh the cons for me at least- i want to avoid angola and some of the other west coast countries as i have friends that have lived there and even they say to avoid. As already stated, most of the people there are good as gold, and i would rather walk around any african country than take a stroll round most of London!

I also want to see Kilimanjaro, lake Victoria and the serengeti. Also planning to meet up with some friends in Tanzania and Rwanda.

If 2010 becomes a possibility- first one to point aghulas buys the beer!!!

Hi Griff/UK Vette,

Looking to travel down to Timbucto about then, interested? A friends on the Plymouth-Bamako run (The Plymouth-Banjul Challenge - Official web site) early October, hope to meet up in Spain/Morocco and travel down with some of the teams.

Cheers, Mark

exc stuff. ive got 3 weeks in marocco and the other week to travel down/up. not sure what kinda pace we will be running at but hoping to dip into western sahara for a day or 2. did you know its the worlds 3rd least populated region in relation to size! (greenland was 1st followed by the falklands)

G

Sounds great, perhaps we can meet up for part of the trip?

"3rd least populated region in relation to size! (greenland was 1st followed by the falklands)" Wasn't in 82' :)

Onelife / Griff,

I am sure we can all catch up with each party, and share the miles n' beers together.

I am looking to go to Morocco as a "expierience getting excercise"

I would look forward to a group keeps up the banter,

one of the sites i used was horizons unlimited lot of information and good links, although a bike site mainly. I travelled down on a bike, hard work but enjoyable. I am going in a landy next year!

I will be doing it early 2010.
I wanted to go the western route.

of the two distinct routes, Eastern or Western side, the Western has by far the better people, animals, and places to see.
It also avoids Egypt with the 800% carnet du passage requirements.

My plan is drive through Spain to Algeciras, and get the ferry to Ceuta, which is a Spanish dependancy on the Northern most tip of Africa.

from there,

Morocco
Mauritania
Mali (Timbuktu)
Burkina Faso (Maybe)
Niger
Nigeria
Camaroon
Gabon
DRC
Angola
Namibia
South Africa

I will plan to take some where around 2 1/2 months to 3 months

I had looked at the East coast route, but Egypt, but the 800% carnet, then the emptyness of a
long southerly trip through Sudan, then the possible
(remember there is a very expensive ferry from Aswan in Egypt to Wadi Hafra in Sudan, only way of crossing from Egypt into Sudan)
conflict in Kenya,
meant passing through Uganda
to get to Tanzania,
Malawi,
Zambia,
Zimbabwe (serious fuel shortages plus others !)
Then into S.A.

All in all, I feel the West coast is for me.

well said CharlesY....agree with ye 1000% (Bushboy)

CharlesY, as narrow minded as that comment is, you (may) have the excuse of not knowing any better, but as for you Bushboy, If Africa is that Uncivilised, and bear in mind you're included in that group "bru", then get your stuff together and pull outta there boetie! Africa and their people are like every other nation on this entire planet. There are the good, bad and the ugly. Most are warm hearted, sincere folk battling to make a life for their families. Every country has their greedy elite at the top oozing with lies and misplaced power to benefit themselves. Africa is no exception to this, and despite it's faults, it is a stunning place to experience. Just saying.

yu forget that CharlesY lives in a country populated by savages and run by crooks and has had lots of experience in that sort of environment :D:behindsofa:

Ahhh so he lives here in England, I'm guessing from your savages comment that he resides in Hackney, or Brixton, or East Ham, or West Ham, or ......
