Hi everybody, sorry if this has been answered before but can anyone lend some help on the locking cover wheel nut things on disco 2's... pretty simple question really but I'm not sure i have all the right tools to do the job so am i missing something (reading the manual makes me think so) or am i having one of those moments OR is it possible to do it with the tools i have? because i can't remove the covers of the wheel nuts... Having said that though i can actually remove the nuts with the covers still on just with the wheel brace but I'm not sure thats the best thing to do or unless thats actually how you do it? (i wouldn't think the covers would hold up very long if used like that though?).
I just bought the kit today as one didn't come with the car if that makes any difference so thanks in advance and as you can probably tell, I'm having one of those moments

i think you have one of those moments m8:D ... the original/normal nuts are working with the covers on all the time, you dont have to force them off, cos if you do the key wont fit...the locking wheel nuts have removable cover as they have a special head and you have to use that addaptor in the key... locking nuts are only one per wheel so identify which one it is cos on that one the cover must come off or it will turn freely with the key...if when you pull the cover you feel like there's a spring pulling it back that one is not a locking nut and let it be as it is...maybe the previous owner replaced the locking nuts with normal ones... i dunno...anyway if you identify the locking nuts make some small sign on the cover to know next time which one it is

Yup only one cover can be removed, that's on the locking-wheel nut which is identified by the indent on the top. There is a plastic tool which is placed over the cap to remove it, the tool is normally part of the toolkit but they can be found if u search the www.

Hi there, if all of your wheel nuts are exactly like the ones in the picture of the wheel, you don't have any locking wheel nuts and the std spanner will fit the nuts as they are, covers left on.

Locking wheel nuts have a dimple on their removable cover, but increasingly owners are getting rid of them as they are troublesome in use.

Okay thanks everybody, moment has passed and problem all sorted :D turns out that the previous owner has replaced the locking nuts on each wheel with standard ones which is where my confusion came from but all good now so thanks again...
And also this is off topic but how does one go about shifting from low to high on the move while towing as recommended in the manual without a rather large clunk? Im aware that 3rd low is approx equivalent to 1st high and have tried double clutching it to rev match the gearbox and engine but still makes a big clunk when i try to shift. This is something both our Discovery's and our Defender does, any advice on that or is that just normal?

Generally, try and avoid changing hi to lo and vice-versa, there's no synchromesh and there's a lot of rotating mass going round, so follow LR recommendations and keep under 5mph, or better still. change before you set off.

Peter

I have noticed that if you leave the cover off one of the locking nuts, people leave notes on your windscreen warning you that you're missing a wheelnut, which is nice of them.

Having been 'there' but only the once trying to get the covers off a non locking wheel nut what exactly DOES hold them on but allow them to be lose like that? Was it a joke on the part of LR design?

I seem to remember being able to pull them all off using the LR supplied black round cover removal tool thingy (SBRCRTT). I might be wrong and the SBRCRTT may have been just for the locking nut. I'm sure I used it on all of them though as I didnt want to scratch the covers. Freestyle alloys on an '99 S reg D90 TD5.

As said previously, I got rid of my locking nuts. They are a pain in the butt. Can't remember last time anyone I know had wheels stolen. If the toerags want them, they will take the whole car. Other problems are ****ers fitting new tyres blasting them up with air ratchets and stretching the life out of them, then we cant get them off cause the adapter is f--cked.
