I was driving a few lanes East of Peterborough the other day with the dogs and met a rather unpleasant character who was blocking the way with his van.
"What you doing here?"
"Just passing by"
"You're not supposed to be here"
" Its a legal right of way - theres a sign saying byway and it's on the map"
"How'd you like it if i drove over your garden? Are you going to pay for the maintenance? etc etc
"Its a legal right of way"
He moved
"Thank you - bye"

I bet this is not an unfamiliar story!

Yep my parents live near Newborough, been laning around there alot and there are quite a few people that don't like 'laners'. Funny one was about 5 of us did night laning in the winter, in series 3's and a couple of 90's. Wasn't late though, just dark, got to the end of a track where the lane began and had to knock on the guys door to ask him to move his car, he didn't say a word, just moved it with us all sitting there, went about a mile down this lane and there was a box welded from bits of scrap metal about 1200mm squared, 1000mm high on a pallet, filled with gravel so he obviously didn't like people using the lane!!

Yep, and usually without reason.Stay on the lane all legal and above board and youll still get moaned at.Google/ youtbe vid greenlane confrentation for an example. NIMBYism mostly.

We can't please everyone, so all we can do is be legal and then be polite.
Why be polite?
I was out laning, legally, when an old biddy moaned at us for driving the lane(she was fly tipping her garden waste at the time). One of our party was ever so friendly and told her "we're driving this lane legally and theres nothing wrong with what ya doing. However were reporting you to the EA and the local authority, so smile ya old trout, youll be oof to the nick soon"
Why be polite to someone stopping me going about my legal business?
