thats on par with "replace nut behind wheel"

i'm not going to say sorry

You made that comment above in support of your "isolate the -ve" case - could you expalin how you'd actually do what your suggesting above bearing in mind that allmost everything metal is a -ve point and would therefore need insulating from it's mating surface if your idea was to be implemented.

Yes you are correct about everything being metal but what I am trying to say is that a small negative link wire with a fuse would give you an earth to run the essentials. In the event of an attempted theft hat small wire would blow the fuse before the engine ever thought about starting. Even if you forgot to add the fuse it would still burn through before the engine started.

So pretty much what Sean suggested in post 19 then i guess!

but that can be instantly defeated by shorting from the -ve terminal to anywhere on the chassis with anything metal and easy to hand - such as a leg from the jump leads setand the concept of having a wire that just burns through as a form of fuse is only likely to result in you getting a visit from the fire brigadgeeach to their own eh .......

Sean. Everybody is going to have their own opinion. I do appreciate What you are saying but you seem to be twisting mine. At NO point did I say that you need to INSULATE each and every electrical system on the car which is what you have stated. I merely said that when you wish to bypass a system you usually apply a positive not a negative. Yes a thief can put an eart lead from the battery to an earth point. At the same time he can stick a positive lead from the battery to the starter. Which is funnily enough where they usually take there power source from. In MY experience of dealing with stolen cars on a day to day basis (including those with cat 1 alarms) the EARTH is the best lead to isolate. What peeps on here want to do is up to them but how many stolen cars have you dealt with?

"You put a small earth to the electrical systems on the dash that require them i.e. to prevent stereo channels being lost, to allow interior lights, hazard lights and alarms and immobilisers to function etc."

My issue with your solution is that the above implies that a large amount of work (isolation) would have to be done in order to implement this solution - how else could you run an earth JUST to keep the mentioned services alive?

And you must agree that allowing that same "small earth" to burn out is just dangerous ?

why not just put a switch in the +side the coil on a petrol or the fuel cut off on a diesel.

that's bloody typical of LZ these days sooner or later someone comes along with a very sensible and practical suggestion, things just arent what they used to be on here

just hang around - it will move into the ethereal soon :D

of course a switch can be switched back on - if you fit a fuse in the circuit - you can take the fuse with you ;)

best security system ah've seen is a lockable non-return valve on the brake system.....the more ya push em, the harder they bite and will not let go.

nuther good one is ta take yer +ve feed to yer key and re-route it to somewhere behind the dash. run it thru a lightly sprung steel contactor and always carry a strong magnet with ya. when u start up yer put the magnet on yer pre-determined spot on the dash and the contactor closes....orf ya go...will take any thief a while to find it

not without electronic latching - why not just have the switch close to the ignition switch and have a magnet on ya key ring? unless yu put it underneath some steel paneling.

dont forget if it latches on - yu need to be able to unlatch it to make it effective - if it is always latched on - it defeats the purpose.
