Guys, need help to help decide. I used to have Disco 1 and military 90 defender before I sold all and moved to new house. Money talks. Anyway I’ve now decided to come back to Landrover. But which model is good ? It is Disco 3, 2.7 engine. Auto or manual gear ? Any tips or things to watch out for. Cheers

You need to do some reading, lots of reading, like all Land rovers the list of what can go wrong is endless.
Buy a goodun no worries, by a badun oh dear!

D3 forum has all the info you will ever need, their wiki section at the top of their home page lists all the cars foibles.

Are they a good choice? It depends on your circumstances. They can be a huge labour of love, which only increases as they age.

They can also be a huge money pit, so be prepared for some scary bills, and I'd suggest keeping a couple of grand contingency fund handy , just in case. ;)

I've actually just been offered a 2005 D3 S for £750. It is in pretty rough condition with 195K miles on the clock. While it is definitely worth well over £750, I can't be bothered with spending every other weekend working on it.

Depends what sort of vehicle you are after really.

The D3 is a superb bit of kit, but it is big, heavy and complex. And unless you have the right gear at home, somewhat more tricky to work on. The 2.7 is the base engine. But lots of different spec. If you want to off road, think about how much. Not all D3's are created equally.

As for manual vs auto. That is a big debate. However in this instance the manual is a fair bit more peppy, arguably a lot more fun and should be more frugal. But some people don't like the manuals for some reason. Lots of manuals as sadly complete base spec too. The auto's are fine, nothing really wrong with them, apart from feeling (and being) slower, less fun and more heavy on fuel. There also feel somewhat dimwitted pulling away from a standstill. Electronic handbrakes can be an issue, which may be more of a concern with a manual, as the auto can be left in Park (apart from MoT time).
