Hi all,

Have owned classic range rovers and p38's bit looking for a l322 diesel ,

What should I look out for when buying one, and are there many problems to be aware of, and also what sort of money should I be looking to pay as prices seem to vary a lot?

Are they more reliable than a p38?

L322 Gearbox is made of cheese, look at £3K for replacement, they last about 80K miles:rolleyes:. HID bulb failure can cause serious problems as Saint.V8 can confirm, many other problems, water in the rear quarter takes out the electronics, steering column movement failure, suspension bushes made of cardboard etc etc. P38 is more reliable, easier and cheaper to fix, it is also the last true Land Rover and is a potential classic.
 
test drive one and decide for yourself

cant be compared to a P38. they are both totally different motors.

The P38 cannot be compared to the L322. P38 = Comfy seats, Connolly leather, well wearing trim. The bean counters at LR really got stuck in with the L322.
Personally, if forced to buy an L322 i'd go for LPG'd V8 - at least the gearbox gives some warning of impending failure.

Keith, you forgot to mention the " rock hard german park bench seats!" Thats a first!!

Can't argue with any of the above....except to say, I wouldn't be without mine, even if a blown HID lamp has managed to feck the diagnostic buses with a voltage spike....still gotta sort that one out!!

They are great vehicles (admittedly mine is a V8) but I have driven the TD6 and it is a good strong motor, just a pity they mated it to the GM5 box which is a little, erm....under-rated for the engine output and the valve block was made from cheap Aluminium alloys.

Yes the L322 has a reputation for eating bushes and leaking into £1500 worth of electronics, but where's the fun with a Toyota....give me a Green Oval any day!!

I have both a P38 and an L322....

I handed my L322 over to my girlfriend as she uses it to chauffer the new daughter around as it has ISOFix mounts and etc which makes getting the baby seat in and out so much easier.....

I missed having a Range Rover of my own and I couldn't afford another L322, so I got a reasonably cheap P38 to run around in, and I am now considering selling my 7'er E38 (735i) as whilst it is an awesome motorway cruiser and is immensely comfortable, I can't really see me it driving much anymore....

If I had the money I would have another L322 any day!

The P38 leather qualityand seat comfort is infinately superior to the L322:p

Must have been recovered for some reason. My understanding is that all P38s had Connolly leather. Superior to whatever they used on the L322 (Connelly ceased trading in 2002).
