Just bought 2nd TD4, unfortunately propshaft has been removed, clunking sound when lifting clutch.

New clutch and fly wheel on vehicle, planning to replace propshaft and vcu, any suggestions on where to purchase reliable reconditioned parts would be appreciated. Also, is it more likely that I have IRD damage? Or could it be a diff mount?

i could be wrong but i cant see how its the diff mount as theres no prop attached to it
ps im feeling your pain im in the middle of what your planning

Of course, duh! Not had a proper look underneath, just bought it. Learning process here.

Check the lower engine tie bar bush. They go soft and allow the engine to flop about.

If it's minus the propshafts, then you want to change the IRD oil before going any further. If the oil is full of metallic silver or grey particles, then the bearings are shot and fitting the propshafts will finish it off.

A word of caution. Only release the IRD drain plug, after the fill plug is removed. Also only use a hex (six flats) socket, as the fill plugs are made of soft cheese.

I too have a td4 full of troubles and its easy to look on the black side all the time worst case etc etc but me been ever the optimist it does sound more of an engine mounting problem also check the cv joints for excess wear bit different sound but still a knock on take up of drive and cornering.
