meant to say the other day

a guy from down the road took the band plug out and has now got to remove his gearbox

on looking at pics ,inc the great one hippo provided , this band plug is actually above the drive shaft and surprised it can be taken out in error

as the level and fill plugs are flat on the bottom of the gearbox

do people mistake this for a level plug

was just wondering if you've heard of this being taken out in error , suppose abit suprised seeing it's tucked away

but at the end of the day if u don't know the box an easy mistake to make

Yes. Owners and garages take it out by mistake. It's covered on ere in some detail. Ashcroft Transmission also advertise it's the wrong bolt. Problem is if you don't know betterer, it would look like a level plug due to it's shape and location.

Peeps have been know to sell FL1's after removing the wrong bolt and loosing reverse gear. they don't tell the buyer. Garages have been known to remove it too by mistake, then position the FL1 so the owner drives it away forwards.

It's a real shame this keeps happening. We get a steady supply of peeps joining up with this problem. At least some of the advertising of the fault on ere may stop others from making the same mistake.

For those that don't know... FL1 Jatco auto level plug and level checking instructions below:

And there is the problem, no one expects a level plug to point downwards, we expect it to be in the side of a housing!

agree in what ur saying , think the main problems is oil and this band

I've never personally seen a level plug at the bottom only on the side

but to be honest when I've worked on cars and unsure have never guessed and always found out first what would happen if I undone something

shame garages make the mistake as they must have manuals and u send it to them due to their expertise

wonder if all the dealers make the mistake with this gearbox seeing it's fitted to jags, vw, Mazda , rover

it's good there's a lot of info on here with regards to this bolt and oil, thks to hippo with his great pics

often wonder if a sticky could be put up titled jatco warning and hippos pics and oil change sequence to be put up as a warning

We could have a sticky but it's already widely advertised on ere and other sites. Whenever someone asks about auto's we mention it. The problem will continue and it would be nice for it to stop, but peeps probably have a go without reading the manual or looking online. Even garages do it. It's an expensive way to learn but not much we can do if they don't look it up before trying.

its in the CFAQ section - peeps need to look - if they dont , they wont see a sticky - yu know what its like........

or is all my stuff invisible?

Yer not invisible.

Most people just try the bolt and don't think to look it up first. Those who come on ere have a fighting chance if they look about and come across it.

I remember some years ago a chap came on who did it to a customers car. When it was established he worked at a garage he got a proper lz kicking and left never to be seen again. I did quiz him at the time by pm. His frank response was that they never turn down work. To them it was just another car. Shame for the owner.
