Hi

No reverse gear !

I have a 2003 landrover freelander td4 which I replaced the engine on about a month ago (it’s the bmw 2.0l – M47) and it has been running really well until the other day when i noticed I have no reverse gear, when reverse is selected it does very slightly lurch backward as if to suggest the gear is engaging but the low clutch solenoid is stopping it from going anywhere( it has the jatco automatic gear box) and all other gears seem to be working ok although ive not taken it up to any speed since this fault so cannot say for sure that all gears are working in the auto mode, there are no knocks rattles or bangs. Ive plugged in a code reader and it gives code P1715 – intermediate speed sensor no signal. I have checked the barrel connectors which are a good connection – no corrosion etc. I have also completed the resistance checks as per the hippophoto video on youtube, the resistance of the intermediate speed sensor was 575 ohms at the ECU connector, the rest of the readings were similar and within the tolerances given in the description of the video apart from the fluid temperature sensor which was open circuit. From what I understand the intermediate speed sensor is not easy to get to or replace as in gearbox out job.

Does anyone know if there is a more definitive way of testing the intermediate speed sensor ? or if there is something else that could be causing this problem ?, the fluid temperature sensor ?

Many thanks for your help

It's not a sensor. It's most likely to be the reverse brake band has worn out. It's very common on the Jatco box. The little lurch you can feel is the reverse brake band contacting the reverse drum, then slipping as it's too worn to stop the reverse drum from rotating.
There's another member on here now with the same issue.
