Good morning everyone, my name is adrien i'm from france and i'm and happy owner of a freelander 1 TD4 hse with 260k km.
When i bought it few months ago i bought it with a shifting issue, i own an auto one with the jatco gearbox. My problem is when driving i experience a shift delay between the 3rd and 4th gear, the rpm tends to increase without shifting directly, for now i think its maybe a solenoid but not sure and cant find anyone near my area with the T4 testbook, i wrote my problem on some facebook group and some told me i may just need an oil service of the gearbox because other had this issue.
From what i understood this is the steps to do it, if i'm wrong any advice will be welcome

First start the engine and let it warm the gearbox between 35 and 45 degres
Put the gearbox in all positions P R N D 4 2 1
Once arrived at temperature unbolt the oil level screw and wait for it to leak a bit of oil, if not leaking add a bit of oil from the top and move position P R N D 4 2 1
Once the leak is weak or stop you can screw the bolt of the oil level.
Open the drain service plug of the gearbox and collect oil and move P R N D 4 2 1
About 4L should come off the drain plug
When its not leaking anymore screw the bolt
From now fill the box with new fluid from the top and put the exact amount who came out and move it P R N D 4 2 1 to make sure the oil goes into all the gearbox
Once finished put back the little cap on the top filler and job should be done

my questions are about the motor running, should it run the whole process or i can turn off at certain time ?
can i take the temperature on the under oil pan of the gearbox ?

Thanks you for your attention and help

You are over-complicating things.
  1. Get the car warmed up - short drive should be enough.
  2. Jack up & make sure you identify the correct drain & level plug locations - plenty of threads on here about it.
  3. Drain the old fluid & re-install the drain plug.
  4. Fill with new fluid until it starts to drip from the level plug.
  5. Now start the engine & do the P R N D 4 2 1 a few times. Monitor Jatco temperature.
  6. When temp is reached, top up the fluid until it drips from level plug again.
  7. Re-install level plug. NOTE: if you don't do this, when stopping the engine fluid will partially drain back to Jatco sump & spill from level hole !!
  8. Stop engine & lower to floor.
  9. Go for test drive.

This is a flairing issue, which is down to worn clutches if I remember correctly.
Mine did it, but I bought a Freelander 2 with issues, so sold the FL1 with the faulty gearbox.

ok it's way easier ahah, thanks you
how could i monitor the jatco temperature ? dont have any diag obd devices

A thermometer works, but you can also just feel the casing temperature with your fingers. 35° C feels just warm to the touch.
It's not super critical anyway, as the fluid only expands 5% between 10°C and 100°C, so the difference between the fluid temperature at ambient temperature and 35°C is negligible.

Hello
Just done it this afternoon like you said
After little drive unscrewed the drain plug (2l came out) Screwed it back
Started to fill about 4l on it
Started the motor and done the prnd421
Was not spilling so i add more till it start dripping
Closed the level plug and gone for a test drive
Result it was worse than before…. Now I don’t have a shifting delay but kind of « kick » when passing from 2 to 3 the car speed reduce like if it was braking a bit and then pass the 3rd gear but with a bang noise on the rear of the car.
Did I make something wrong ? Can I drive like this ? Thanks for helping I’m desespere…

If you only got 2 litres out, then somethings not right. Sounds like it was very low before. Could have broken or worn stuff inside, but first step is to recheck levels with engine running.

As Nodge says the casing should be warn to touch, but don't do it after a drive.

ok thanks I will try to recheck this afternoon, the only thing I’m a bit confused is that before it was running more « smoothly » than after the drain, maybe I overfilled or underfilled it ? Is it possible that before it was running underfilled so more smoother ? Thanks
