Pre Script : perlease dont post any "this thread is useless without pictures" things as I have no way of getting the pictures as I havent took delivery of vehicle yet...thanks!

On the japanese re import 97 300tdi that I have a deposit on there is an EGR setup that I have not seen before : it has a water pipe divert to a 2" x 4" cylinder on top of it instead of the usual cap and thin vacuum hose. Now I can blank it of as usual, and divert water pipes to bypass, but, out of interest, can anyone tell me whats going on there?

thanks again

It sounds like it has an egr cooler like the later TD5's have.

Sounds just like my re-import TDi300. It's either to keep the RGR assembly nice and warm or cool, I'm not sure which, although I suspect the former. This may reduce gumming and water vapour in teh exhaust condencing etc. Mine seems to be in good working condition and not playing up, so have left all in situ and original. Easy enough test to see if it's faulty (eg, it's opening when it should'nt) is to start the engine and feel the metal convoluted connection to the inlet pipe, if the valve is leaking/open it gets hot very quickly, even when idling.

Out of interest I have disconnected the vacume connection to disable it and the car sounded/droves exactly the same. Obviously if it was faulty it would probably have made a difference.

I removed the intercooler the other day expecting to find it all gummed up, but was in lovely clean condition, with only slight trace of grime inside (I flushed it through anyway). So if they are working OK, they do not appear to cause a problem. BTW mine has 44k on the clock so is low mileage, which probably helps.

I am concidering removing mine as a preventative measure, but the prospect of shearing off rusty bolts and having to replumb the coolling is putting me off until it actualy fails :)

Yep, but that's probably given it the kiss of death now, no doubt it will start playing up from this point forward LOL :)
