A bodge i did years ago was to fit a new cross drilled output gear this had longer splines on than the original so picked up on the short undamaged section of gearbox output shaft, i then proceeded to drive another 50k like this and it was fine, even though there only about a third lengthwise os the gearbox splines doing the driving.
This wasnt just road work it was towing off roading etc etc.
I shall be doing the same to my current 90 when i get the chance.

pulll gear out first and check splines on gear box shaft as they are often gone completely along length ,some as above while not something i could recommend would be worth a try if enough left
 
the cross drilled wether pattern or oe have longer splines i would fit pattern for price and they do work ,but check mainshaft before fitting on shaft even though one is neede to fix t/box, if yours is def box gear will be ftc5089 for cross drilled gear unless yours is early b suffix with thinner toothed gear which cant be replaced with cross drilled gear and is frc5428

the mainshaft will be worn and to replace box needs complete stripping and rebuilding of which i would help someone do their own if they came to my workshop,transfer box just needs input gear changing,both allways wear together
 
Cheers mate, if it was to fail, would it ruin the box or will an overhaul get it on the road again? Ie will it crack cases?
 
no wont harnm just loose drive,cost of parts to reco gear box including new genuine brgs and baulk rings ,mainshaft ,seal etc £150 + vat for lt77,
 
Then 50 for the tbox input shaft? Hmmmm interesting, how much for r380? Same issues with play in shafts. (both me and a mate need our box's rebuilding!) cheers fella.

I will get the input gear off and have a propper look at the shaft when it stops raining. driving it to croatia in a few months so may just get a new box and be done with it.
 
Recon for you! I don't kno when to do mine.. Whether to let it fail first while I save money or skint myself before..
