got the chance of a td6
however it will not change beyond 3rd gear in auto.
could it be the control module or more likely to be the box.
the car is cheap taking this into account.
its a 06/06 facelift which i thought may have the newer box in but spoke to lr and they said it was the dreaded gm5.
would it be safe to drive its 240 miles away.

£8700
240 miles from me
banking on a £2k bill plus getting it back
Hmmmmm.... £8700 for a 2006 is at the lower bracket end for a 2006,

Usually the GM Fault doesn't stop it from changing gears, The GM Fault is a ****e valve block causing reduced Hydraulic Pressure due to valve cylinder wear causing the TQ to slip and wear out, dumping ****e into the box!

Does it have Trans Failsafe message on dash??

Does it lock up above 52-56mph??

Get it on a Diagnostics, they do suffer from Speed Sensor Problems in the Box too which can prevent finding the right gears!!

As for the drive, Depending on the Diagnostics results....and the actual drive (vibrations, shunting and hunting for gears etc) you *may* be ok....personally I'd walk from it - long way to go for a RR with a fault if you ask me...plenty around - remember the Golden Rule......!!!!

its a vogue se aswell.
it is a pure chance, but someone mentioned control module.
i am working on the box job.
just wondering to drive back or get it recovered

Does it select Gears above 3rd in manual mode??

Is it stuck in 3rd (Limp mode is usually 4th or 5th)??

Control Module is usually pretty good.....

Seek out on Rangerovers.net and fullfatrr.com a chap called RRPhil (He is Bemble on here - but rarely visits) he is a GB genius - albeit more knowledgeable on the ZF but he has a wicked handle on the GM Box...

You could attempt to drive it home, then if it all goes Pete Tong, get recovered :D

im unable to drive it or get diagnostics on the job.
however i do think its a calculated risk worth taking.

which year did the gearbox change.i thought it changed with the facelift but i was wrong

think the gm gearbox stayed with the TD6 engine until they stopped including the td6 in the l322.

if your not sure about it, budget for a TDv8 :D

Being optimistic for a moment, if the transmission will shift all the way to 5th when it’s cold but not when it’s warm (i.e. after 20 minutes or so from starting from cold) then it may just be that the fluid is overheating because the bottom of the main radiator is clogged with sediment. The transmission ECU then selects its ‘cooling strategy’ mode and inhibits upshifts to keep the engine speed high and the pump flow at its maximum for cooling.

just got back in one piece.
car runs great apart from the box issues.
it changes up to third ok.just wont go beyond weather in drive or sport mode.in sport mode it seems to go from 2nd then to fifth on the display but doesnt actually change just in third all the time.
in drive it goes to third, when going downhill, lifting off the throttle it seems to go into neutral then goes back into third when you apply throttle.
its a new one on me

forgot to say
when started there is no warning on dash.
however as it gains speed the trans safe mode comes on and goes back off.
it performs the same warm or cold

if got worse i would have pulled over and got recovered
it just kept going and going with no adverse effects
