Your transmission should failsafe to 5th gear, so the fact that it stays in 3rd even when TRANS FAILSAFE PROG is displayed indicates that it’s mechanically unable to select 4th and 5th gears which, in the case of the GM 5L40-E transmission, points to an issue with the direct clutch drive to the rear epicyclic carrier assembly. By far the most common cause of this is the shaft shearing off where it attaches to the drum. The shaft is manufactured like the inside of a toilet roll and it unwinds and then shears off.

I would suggest that you take the sump off and look for any metallic debris on the magnet.

box gone for repair should know in the next day or so just how badly damaged it is

box stripped and the shaft had gone west.
hope to have it repaired and recond this week.
