I have had the propshaft removed VCU done 90000 miles rumbling noise under middle of vehicle so presumed VCU.Now quite without propshaft drives alot more responsive. If the IRD was damaged would it show now its in 2 wheeled drive or not.

No, but by getting underneath and checking for play in the pinion, the bit the prop fits to, you will get an idea of wear in the pinion cog and bearing.
Also, drop the IRD oil, ensure the fill plug unscrews first!

If the vcu was rumbling and it is better without it then the vcu may be tight and need replacement, but sounds like bearings are kaput. Spin them and listen.

Bell engineering supply a vcu with new fag bearings ready to fit as an exchange item.
