I have read the threads and after checking all the likely causes battery alternator wireing it seems the fault can lie with a bad connection at the bcem I was not sure where this was located but thanks when I get around to cleaning the connections I will post the result but in this weather not yet thanks now I know where this unit is joe. Could be a bad connection between the alternator and the BECM, or it might just be telling you the truth, that your alternator is stuffed

To be honest I hope it is I hate messing with electrical items I'm more of a fitter than a sparki although cleaning a connection is far cheaper
