Just wondering if you have had the opportunity to go on a long run with the car yet? Its just that as you've had that battery reset blip as well, I've noticed from experience that the MPG computer needs a good run after a battery change/reset before it starts reading reasonably again. And spending hours on tick-over idling can use quite a lot more petrol than you realise......

Personally, I'd go on a nice long motorway type trip (well A-roads in your case as you're in Norwich and no motorway any near you!!) and see if it settles down before you spend any more money...

thanks for all advice,

took kids to school this morning and averaged 3.7 mpg.
i uncliped the switch and apart from upsetting the idle initally it was
just the same rich smell, i allso cleaned the air intake but it wasn't
excessively dirty.

now going on a run
on a positive note the air con is working, pipe cold and everything

you can replace it cheaply, do it yerself!!! they cost around £250 from LR but i would pop to a local scrapyard!!!

£250? I was quoted nearer £800 by a few parts places when mine (non-genuine one) was pronounced dead! Managed to get one from P38spares.co.uk in the end for £400 odd though. Apparently the non-genuine ones are rubbish and not worth bothering with, but that's only what I was told.

mine did not want to run but as soon as i hit the gas it corrected itself.
just been on a 10 mile drive around town and the computer has gone up
from average 3.9mpg to 5.8mpg.... wow...

it is all running smoothley no missing, accelerating good and drives and
steers lovely.

the air con has stopped again the ice cold pipe has gone hot again.
there are definatly no leaks in the system.

with the mas plug in. i think that price is rubbish.
there are some on ebay from scrap yards etc for £30
and i am sure i could get one from a breakers yard
if i needed one but don't know yet.
rangiegal may advise later

I'd be looking to drive for more than 10 miles around town - open road, upwards of 30 miles or so, I'd say, then check again.
Bit of a bummer the aircon playing up in this weather - hope you get it sorted. Did you have the blend motors changed, by the way, and has the book symbol vanished? If the electrics and relays all test ok, I would think it may be worth considering a new aircon pump or a recon at least.

i will be driving the beast from this point on so hopefully will learn abit
more about symptoms etc.. i noticed another switch on the air filter
box itself... whats this?

no no blend motor change, jason said all ok but i did notice today
when the aircon stopped working ( just ambient air coming in )
i whacked the right temp up to high and no change, but when i
whacked the left side up it want instantly hot all over.

book symbol has vanished

I do wonder if that Hevac head unit isn't faulty....my blends went down and were replaced by Jason, but there were still odd things going on....temp not changing as expected, etc, and Jason came back a few days later and loaned me a working head unit till I bought one off our John :)
No problems since then, touch wood. Fantastic freezing cold aircon. Lots of weird aircon problems seem to be down to an intermittent electronic problem in the head unit. I also had the condensor done shortly after as my first gas recharge all leaked out within a few days:eek: At the moment, all's well

The aircon tech I use never changes the drier though, unless its obviously leaking. Mine hasn't been a problem and I've had three condensors in the five years I've owned the Rangie - the orig one plus a new one two years ago, and another new one now - but no new driers needed. Must be built like complete sh**te to collapse so quickly - we've got a 1997 Hyundai Sonata that still has the original condensor and works a treat. If only P38s were built the same.....:D
