How many plates can you get away with on a chassis?

In hindsight I should have brought a galvanised chassis, or before going out and buying a rear x member with extentions, a front x member and a couple of out riggers I should have at least cleaned up the chassis to check the full extent of the rot.

My chassis has a "few" plates on it and after finding a few more holes i am in the process of putting a few more on. (few actually means quite a few) My question is will it get to the point where the MOT inspector may say you have got too many an I cannot pass it, or is it the case provided all the metal is sound it doesn't matter how many there are?

Any advice will be greatly received.

i think i could do with knowing the answer to this as well.

As long as you haven't structurally altered it, length, width etc and the number is still legible then it's legal. Just a heavily repaired chassis.

how important is the number? i've never been able to find it on mine, no reason to suspect anything dodgy, but the past repairs seem to have covered it

re stamp it then on the spring hanger, if its not there its probably been covered over or removed during a dumb iron repair

I hope there's not a limit! My 110 has early as many plates as original chassis! :lol:

Thanks for your help-it has given me a bit more impetus to carry on this afternoon. I wwas debating phoning the scrappy this morning.

when i got mine i found it had plates welded on plates all along the main rails and i did have the same worry as you have so what i did was use 4mm thick steel sheet and cut out the entire rotten bit with the patchwork bits anorl and replaced the lot with one new big patch wich was let into the chassis and back plated to guarrantee strength and get a near flush finish

so when i painted the chassis after id done it looked totaly original tidy and fresh so the MOT man wont even have to **** it with the chocolate fireguard hammer

I've been using 2.4mm on all my patches so far.

i've also been working on this big boy for the gear box xmember.
i've no experience with this really, doe sit look like it's suitable?
needs some tweaks but it will be on there this week
