I can see 100% why you want one, a std, original one is still a fine car.
...from my angle and for what it's worth (I have my own car sales and we sell a few 4x4's) the price of Classics are on the rise, they aren't old banger fodder anymore (were they ever?)....super clean ones make very good money at auction now. P-38's are
still getting cheaper and haven't bottomed out. I can always trade a leggy or tatty Classic out, a leggy or tatty P-38 will have to go to auction.
A very tatty Classic with rear end damage to rear bumper, boot and tailgate, sitting badly on failing airsuspension, M plate Vogue SE with 100K +, sold for £650 + indemity @ £80 only this week at auction and a dealer bought it! Lots are going off to Africa too
When ever I get a good, clean, honest well maintained Classic in p/x they don't hang around very long, regardless of spec'.
....and interestingly, the last few have
all been bought by guys who have had Classic's, then bought P-38's only to go back to a Classic...can't blame them, I think the Classic Range Rover make's for a better second hand Range Rover than the P-38, for those buying on a budget... certainly easier to maintain, certainly cheaper and many say to me they prefer the looks, still classless, whilst the P-38 still can look a little akward from certain angles.
I don't sell P-38's anymore, there are too many serious wallet busting issues that can make repair uneconomical...I simply can't put decent warranties on P-38's anymore, I CAN on a late Classic. The burnrates (claims) of the P-38A make the warranties unprofitable for the provider...the last time I got a quote for a P-38 warranty for one year was £1,200 cost
...the classic was £280....mind you a Jeep Cherokee is only £168!
Strangely when we do get a Classic in, I always take it home, look at it with a beer in the evening and think what nice old buses they were, drive it around for days and look at it as it drives off when sold, which is rare for me.... one day I will hold one back.
