The wife has expressed a desire for a classic. Awesome! Just had a look about and wow, they are two a penny! So, I'll be getting her one shortly. As soon as we have it I'll pop some pics up etc.

In the mean time I'm scouring the net... Any nice cheap ones in devon? I have my eye on a couple on Fleabay for now.

She wants a V8 Auto.

are you sure her desire is for a classic car and not a classic gentleman with loads of cash??? mind you that would give you the go ahead to get a younger model!!! lol!!!

i only wish my wife would show interest in the virtues of a v8

Hmm, glad she mentioned the V8 bit, otherwise I'd be worried now, especially as I'm older than any Rangey lol. Nah, She's still in her twenties but seems to be having a premature midlife crisis and chopping in her Vectra! We're now considering the virtues of a 4.2, 3.9 or a 3.5. Age is no concern as it'll be my job to spend all weekend fixing it, whilst she is checking out younger men!

I can see 100% why you want one, a std, original one is still a fine car.

...from my angle and for what it's worth (I have my own car sales and we sell a few 4x4's) the price of Classics are on the rise, they aren't old banger fodder anymore (were they ever?)....super clean ones make very good money at auction now. P-38's are still getting cheaper and haven't bottomed out. I can always trade a leggy or tatty Classic out, a leggy or tatty P-38 will have to go to auction.

A very tatty Classic with rear end damage to rear bumper, boot and tailgate, sitting badly on failing airsuspension, M plate Vogue SE with 100K +, sold for £650 + indemity @ £80 only this week at auction and a dealer bought it! Lots are going off to Africa too:confused:

When ever I get a good, clean, honest well maintained Classic in p/x they don't hang around very long, regardless of spec'.

....and interestingly, the last few have all been bought by guys who have had Classic's, then bought P-38's only to go back to a Classic...can't blame them, I think the Classic Range Rover make's for a better second hand Range Rover than the P-38, for those buying on a budget... certainly easier to maintain, certainly cheaper and many say to me they prefer the looks, still classless, whilst the P-38 still can look a little akward from certain angles.

I don't sell P-38's anymore, there are too many serious wallet busting issues that can make repair uneconomical...I simply can't put decent warranties on P-38's anymore, I CAN on a late Classic. The burnrates (claims) of the P-38A make the warranties unprofitable for the provider...the last time I got a quote for a P-38 warranty for one year was £1,200 cost:eek:...the classic was £280....mind you a Jeep Cherokee is only £168!

Strangely when we do get a Classic in, I always take it home, look at it with a beer in the evening and think what nice old buses they were, drive it around for days and look at it as it drives off when sold, which is rare for me.... one day I will hold one back.

Hi all.

I had a p38 and when it was time for another car i went back to the Classic. Got a soft dash with the brooklands kit. It needs a fair bit of work but rather splendidly i can do it all my self and it is minus the air suspension which is marvellous and what a ride but....i could never garantee that it would work properly and i always resented having to take it to someone else to fix, which was made all the clearer by owning my 109 v8 which had no elctrickery on it.
I quite agree that the classic looks better than the P38, somehow seems more.........classic in it's design. Would have to be seriously sweet talked into another one. Interestingly i was putting my boat on the water and my friend was talking to a guy who was watching us with interest and saying that he had just changed his P38 for a RR sport and wished he never had as it felt very MFI.......

Cheers, Nick.

Classics are great cars.Spent 650 quid getting mine for off roading.Used and abused, theres tons of pics on here of me stuck in it.But it still goes, i can fix it and its a great drive-espcially motorways and im happy to sit in it all day long. The down side is it looks dated, mines tatty and its thirsty.
Dont get a 4.2 tho.Thats a LSE.Ask sirus wot troubles he had with his

A good P38 is a great ride but what a nightmare when they play up. I have a 91 Classic and like Goonarmy I abuse it terribly. It does need regular fixing and tlc but that is only because of what I do to it.

A good classic is a great second car, if you find one in good nick it is probably worth spending time and reasonable money getting it mint. In the alternative you could just use it as a plaything.
