Hi all I am new landys and have bought a 2000 (very reg) disco it drives well but when I drove on gravel it spins the front wheels only. I don't know anything about discos. Can anyone help me????

Yes that was the first thing I thought. There is no stranger noises or anything????

sorry it might be different to mine, as its a 300 tdi and you push the stick to the left to lock it. sounds like some sort of problem in the transfer box

Have you tried jaking up one of the back wheels popping it in a gear ,then turning the wheel ,see what moves or how feels

Sorry don't quite understand what you believe is the problem? Did the vehicle move, when you were on this gravel or did you just sit there wheels spinning?

It is only having drive to the front wheels if I try to drive up a hill with wet grass on it I get so far and then both front wheels spin and the back wheels don't do anything its like not having the rear prop on. How do I find out what is wrong??? Not sure on how to test things as I have not had a 4x4 before

or a diff fault?

Diff is rather unlikely to fail without majorly grinding though this is obviously assuming that the spider gears have broken free somehow and are rattling about

Although would it be possible for the propshaft to strip its splines thus letting it look like its turning but not ? that way there'd be no crunching so not too obvious

only one way to find out, half shafts out and diff off
