Front wheel drive only freelander 2

Hi every, new to your site,
just bought 2007 freelander 2, only front wheel drive works, no strange noises, drives great. What’s gone wrong? Please advise

I live on a steep hill and the car‘s front wheels spin and slip trying to get going. I’ve had a few 4x4s over the years so wasn’t expecting this to happen.

Had this on my freelander 2 few years go. Both manual and autos suffer from gearbox spline wear, there’s a splined coupling in the power transfer unit (gearbox/transfer box in one unit kind of idea) the splines couple the rear prop, they wear and strip, no noises and won’t affect the way it drives unless snow or mud etc it will drive like a normal 2wd car, it’s gearbox out and replace splined coupling, Google Bell engineering, I phoned them when mine went and spoke to Austin who knew his stuff and was one of the few in Britain able to repair them instead of scrap it the box and buy new. Very common apparently more so on autos.

Also just to add they did make a rare model that was just 2wd but if I’m not mistaken it came out much later than 07, easy way to tell is Jack the back up and spin the rear prop, if it’s still working it won’t move (gearbox in 1st- front wheels on ground- handbrake off) if splines have gone rear prop will go round even in gear with front wheels on ground.

Not sure how much torque is transmitted though the Haldex (volted onto the front of the diff) when the ignition is off, but if its like the F1 if you jack 1 rear wheel up and turn it the prop shaft should try to turn. If it does, then the splines have gone as described above.

If the wheel turns but not the prop shaft, then turn the prop shaft by hand. Once again, if it turns, then the splines have gone.

Bell' are a great suggestion for a fix. They can also give your Haleex a good sercice it it hasn't been done in a while.

The 2wd ed4 was released in summat like 2011.

Probably the PTU splines have stripped as suggested above, which is pretty common.

Well, atleast you checked. It not unknown for some people to remove them.
