Help with flashing S and M on display

Hi guys, we have a 2001 Td5 Discovery that has started showing up cog shaped lights that have an S in one and an M in the other. they did it once months ago and now almost every time we start up the engine they light up and we have to restart the engine several times to get the lights to go off... please can any of you advise us as to what they are and how to sort it out (hopefully cheaply!!) We don't have a handbook to look through and cannot find it in any threads so any ideas would be gratefully recieved....

ok, ok I realised after I posted it that the title may get responses like this... OOh I wish I had a time machine but as I haven't and I've made you giggle can you help????
 
new batteries arent necessarily perfect ,trickle charge it over night or test voltage when cranking,are you doing short journeys with lights on fan on etc,
