Help! Which Land Rover do I need!?

Hello,

I am looking at getting a Land Rover Series/Defender but don't know which is the best for me, be it a SWB or LWB, classic or modern etc?

I intend to travel around Europe for a few months and live in and out of the car so need enough space for gear and 2 people and reliability (I can maintain the car myself). I want a land rover for the obvious reasons just don't know which one is for me.
The chosen vehicle needs to be suitable for an everyday car as well as an adventurer/tourer.

Any help and guidance would be much appreciated!

Well that is quite a broad brush you got there. What sort of budget?

You do not say if you will be equipping with kitchen , sleeping kit insdie the vehicle r a roof tent, outside tent?

But , I would look at a 110 , Diesel 300tdi / td5 . Van panel .

Good points!

I wouldn't, I would go all out on a 101 forward control ambulance and convert it into a camper, or a 127 ambulance perhaps? Even the 109 & 110 Wolf ambulances would make brilliant campers

I really like the idea of a Series 1 or 2 and putting a roof tent on that and just using a BBQ so no need for a camper conversion just precise packing. (First Overland book being my inspiration for that)
My budget is around £6K plus kitting out expenses.

For that sort of money a S1 is going to be difficult if you want a decent motor. A 109 SII may be possible , but still going to take some hunting to avoid the dross.

I would stick with what I suggested before, but good luck. Enjoy the trip, it starts here searching for your motor.

Nope

Unless I am sorely mistaken, anything automotive could be driven as an everyday car, in fact I have a workmate who uses his camper converted LWB Transit jumbo van as his daily driver and another who has a small DAF tractor unit for towing his semi horse trailer and after crashing his car just uses the tractor unit as a car to get around in, yeah they are a bit eccentric but aren't we all?

If you're going down the roof tent route then a 110 DCPU might be a good option as you can put the roof tent on top of the pickup body and still have space underneath for kit and the second row of seats would double as storage for secure storage of stuff when you need as well as seating for extra passengers when not being used as an expedition vehicle.

To be honest mate, for what you’ve described get a ford transit and kit out the back.

I agree with Neilly, a 110 gives you a drivable manouverable everyday vehicle with plenty of carrying capacity and space in the back. You’re in tdi/td5 territory but £6k isn’t a big budget so u need to look very carefully at condition.

Series are lovely landys but anything pre-tdi is a bit laborious and slow, especially up hills and on motorways. SWB landys are good but if you want to travel and sleep in your Landy a LWB will be easier.

exactly this but if you go for a landy fill it with spares and bring a big set of hammers and spanners and sleep on the roof

Reliable means no landy for you

£6000 is Discovery 2 plus a really good service and fitting out.

Defenders too expensive

For 6 grand you could get a D2 and really do it up if needed

He could get a Fender for that money, just will take some hunting and not be a newish one (probably a 300tdi at best).. Alternatively, he could get a D2, and if not careful end up with a rot box that will not be going anywhere in the long term.
