hi have a problem my viscus fan has come off and the bit it screws onto is still in the back of the fan its come off the shaft but i cant see how it was held on . has anyone any ideas how to refit it or what i need to do to fix it .its a defender 300 tdi thanks

Put it in your shed and leave it there. The only time you'l need it is when your towing a caravan up a 30% incline in Equador on a summers day. ;)

Seriously, you dont need it. My TD5 hasnt had one for 2 years now. :D

You may it off roading or lanning if its serious work your doing, mine over heated at our pay n play last weekend due to all the climbing. But otherwise as Ging says garage it.

Keep in mind its a 300tdi NOT a TD5... TD5's are known for running a hell of a lot cooler than a tdi engine.

I would put it back on if I were you, all you need is to be stuck in traffic on a hot day and it will knock up the temp.

I wouldnt break your back trying to do it but depending on what you use the vehicle for its there for a reason.

What? Park the vehicle up in a garage and leave it there? Why would you want to carry a fan about with you?

no ,most of the time a fan is surplus but there are times when its not ,you might get someone whose lucky not to accounter those times but most will

Unless you know individuals driving habits it is impossible to answer then?

There are lots of peeps who haven't needed them ............ Ever!

If it gets hot, turn the injun off and put the fan on. I used to carry mine in the back of the Disco, just in case. After 2 years it got filed in the garage.

its like recommending russian roulette ,you cant know circumstances that people will encounter and there are more than one were stopping and letting it cool down would be inconvenient

You dont need to know circumstances, it comes with a fan to cover the event which makes a fan a requirement. Land Rover designed it to be a standard requirement for general driving.

Hell he may as well leave the engine in the garage as he doesnt use the landrover for anything other than use as a paperweight.

If it heats up for any one of 100 reasons it NEEDS THE FAN and to just state "bollix" yours has never needed one is just a bull**** narrow minded answer. He could have heat issues/pipes, or his radiator may be blocked with a bit of off roading.. or the more common, a very hot day and hills/lack of movement.

LOL, in the middle of traffic jam just get out and pop the bonnet and slip the fan on.. uhh huhh such a sensible answer which will have the coppers nicking you if any are around which they are likely to be if its a road accident blocking the roads.

There are millions driving who have never used airbags it doesnt mean anything... there are pilots who havent used ejector seats... it doesnt mean anything.

I took mine off when I fitted my snorkel, never put it back on, got an electric fan now for offroading and landing as it does get a little hot then but apart from that its never needed

Eric, jamesie, those are fatuous arguments.

To say that because lr did it, it must be correct, means that it would be wrong to do any modifications, because, for example LR didn't think it was necessary to fit diff guards or snorkle, then we shouldn't.
As for having the fan fitted because, one day, you might need it is like saying "all cars should have a spare tyre, because one day yu might need it".

Do you carry a spare water pump or brake pads?

We will never agree on this. Some people do and some don't. To the OP - make up your own mind.

My 200tdi was always running hot. The cowl from the engine to the rad was never fitted. I changed the rad and now it runs up to 1/3 on the gauge and 1/2 under load. Baring in mind the cowl isnt fitted and there is about 8" between the rad and the viscous fan, I dont think the fan is having any effect whatsoever. I'll leave it on though, even if it has had all my knukles off and smashed my inspection lamp:mad:
