Hi, I'm new/ hope this is in right section/ hope you can guide me:

I'm looking at facelift version RR Vogue Diesels around the £15k mark and with FSH/ 70 to 80 k miles.

I've previously bought - when they were about 12 mths old - Disco 3 HSE and recently sold a Q7... Both great cars but the Q7 (even with an approved warranty) was astronomical to run (£4500 spent on issues in previous 12 months!).

There are nice looking (non pimped) RR Vogue TD6 and TDV8 around the £15k mark (intend to keep car a max of 2 years and estimate I'll do no more than 15k miles in that time).

What make engine is the TD6 in a 55 plate facelift (BMW or Ford/ other)?

Not worried about fuel consumption but I am mindful about resale price and feel £270 v £475 for road tax might draw more private buyers towards a mint/FSH 10 year old RR when I come to sell (I wouldnt really want to get less than £10k in private sale in a couple of years/ is that realistic?).

I've got £900/ year set aside for maintenance (should that be enough)?

RR are great looking cars but are they reliable/ don't have the time to be forever at the garage???

Hope you can help/ thanks:confused:

The TD6 is a BMW lump. Not a bad engine by all means.

What sort of year are you looking at for the £15k mark ?

If you up your budget just 3k more, you will be able to get the better, more sort after TDv8 jag engine.

That's More likely to hold its money.

But by all means no range rover holds its money well !

Another member will be along soon to give a more detailed write up for you
:)

The range rover is going to be very similar running costs to your Q7 and disco 3.
So at least your used to the costs by now so It won't come as a shock to you

Main problem with the td6 models is the gearbox !
Which usually is guaranteed to fail at around the 80-90K miles mark

Hope this helps
Good luck

There is a 55 plate TD6 for sale at £15/ FSH... There's an 06/55 TDV8 for sale around the same price but as you mentioned, my reckoning was around £3k more for such a car so wondering if something 'not right' about such a cheap one...

Is the gearbox the same on TD6 and TDV8 around the 2006 mark then/ if it's not been replaced, should I steer clear from 80k mls car (unless properly warrantied)...

For now, I'm just hoping to spend up to £15k and get at least £10k back in a couple of years.

As for the other comments re the £900/ year.. 4x4 cars we've owned before were a lot newer/ approved warrantied so the budget did -in the main - cover them.. That's why I asked the 'stupid question' to know what I'm in for with a much older car renowned for/ with reliability queries

And someone has obviously never had a Butler before (£900/ part time!.. in 1956 perhaps)... Lol:crazy_driver:

Different gearbox on the tdv8

The td6 uses a GM gearbox
From 2002 up to 2006 I think

The tdv8 uses a ZF gearbox that is supposed to be slightly more reliable lol

Don't be too hopefull of getting 10k back

Thanks/ your comments have been constructive/ appreciated.

Does anyone please know:

1. Approx how much a new gearbox costs???

2. Does remapping the TD6 improve the refinement/ driving experience.. what real life benefits are there and what would the approx cost of a remap be (any downsides)?

Thanks again

No worries

1) - gearbox rebuild on an L322 is around £2-3K I believe

2) - remap / tuning chip dramatically changed the way the td6 drives
Much more nippier, earlier gear changes / Less frequent gear changes and yes better MPG if you are careful with your lead foot lol

Remap is about £300
Tuning boxes range from £80 and £400

Mine runs with an £80 box that works great. Good thing with a plug in box is that you can unplug it whenever you want (say if you get engine problems) and you can adjust the power setting yourself whenever you want unlike a remap.

Only downside is with a remap / tuning box is if you use the extra power a lot / rag the car about town your guaranteed to shorten the life of the gearbox.

Either way, I run mine with a cheapo plug in chip box and the car runs great. I just frequently change the oil and filter on the gearbox to try and prolong the life

I would keep away from the 55 reg l322
As saint v8 mentioned the 55 year was a bit weird with the onboard electrics and interior

Some models where non facelift but with facelift interiors
Or some only had part of the facelift interior mixed with the old
A bit of a mess in my opinion

Hope this helps

Great reply/ thanks...

I wouldn't buy one without a decent warranty so gearbox should be covered touch wood...

One 55 reg that I quite like was reg'd in Nov 2005, is 2006MY, has the exterior facelift and touch screen sat nav etc.. is that not the full facelift (advert says it has 7 spoke 18" wheels though which seems a bit underwheeled though/ not sure if 18" is a misprint) .. if my pointers do not guarantee full facelift how do I know if full facelift or not please/ can anyone help?

Cheers

theres only one part of the facelift from the outside that is easily identified and thats the front end.

it should have the newer shape rounded lights, grille that's shaped round the light units and the shaped bumper.

the only usual differences was on the interior.. like my previous post i stated, some have the touch screen sat nav, some don't... some have the touch screen sat nav but not the updated dash.

if you get a 2007 model you then get the terrain response. (see below)

not sure about those wheels sizes, but if i remember rightly the TD6 come with 18" wheels as standard. They didn't give an option for a larger wheel size as it causes vibration issues through the drive train.

However... I have 20" wheels on my TD6 and its fine :)

regarding the facelift, check its factory fitted as it can be retro fitted (like I have done with mine)

hope this helps
cheers :)
