Help 300tdi manual box

Hi. Im new to this and could really use some help. My Discovery gear shift is hovering between 1st and 2nd when in neutral not 3rd and 4th. As you can imagine, it makes gear changes in traffic extremely entertaining. Has anyone got any info on what the problem is and how to solve it.
