Had a great morning drive this morning...ran all the errands I needed. Pulled into the car park at my last stop and then--NOTHING--Landy wouldn't start. Worse off, the glow plug relay started smoking and the glow plug wires were burning hot. I disconnected the relay and just went for a start....NOTHING. There IS power to the starter---and I do hear a click---I tried banging on the starter to encourage the solenoid....NOTHING.

Any ideas folks? Yes--I'm a newbie--and really appreciate any help.

first off check the engine bay fuses. Then check the voltage at the battery as is and when attempting to crank.

Unless you had an electrical short (which should have blown the fuses), my guess is that the alternator is overcharging and cooking things.

aren't the only fuses on the firewall inside the cab? I don't understand why I stopped/started 10 times this morning and then---NOTHING---except for the click that I hear coming from the starter/solenoid area (although it is tough for me to hear while sitting in the cab)

I can't remember if the 200tdi defender has em in the engine bay or not. I know the disco does.

You could try giving the starter a whack with a persuasion tool.

No I didn't hear this---but thought if the fuel solenoid was closed that the motor would still turn over and not fire....but would still turn over, wouldn't it?

Could a short to the glow plugs have drained the battery - enough to open the solenoid but not turn over? Have you tried a jump start? :)

haven't tried the jump start---got nothing to lose, i guess. I had to leave the Landy in the car park while i came home to "troubleshoot" on the internet!

i'll give it a try---also going to take some WD40 to the leads....although i had a tough time even SEEING the wire leads on the starter. i took off the heat shield around the turbo and that helped a little....we'll give it a shot.

Okay---just got back. We got it started, but it wasn't pretty.

Tried to jump it: only a click
Tried to clean the contacts: only a click
Tried to tighten/wirebrush the contacts: only a click

About to call for the tow truck when we tried starting it in gear. Heard 1/100th of a crank...there was hope! We kept it in gear, rocked it back 3 feet and cranked at the same time...voila, it started!

Got it back home just now....turned it off....turned it on...and guess what: CLICK!!

Time for a new starter....what else could it be?
