97 DSE-- why do i have hot air blowing from drivers side and cold from passenger side and to rear?
I have an idea it is the heater control as the service manual light is on but is there any diy fix. and how do i access the heater box--:( any ideas would be appreciated

hi there,

Mine does exactly the same . There is a servo on the right hand side of the centre console . Basically a motor that turns a flap to divert hot or cold air . I would guess that this is stuck in the hot postion . If you have a good look through the site there is thread to another site with a detail explaination of how to fix this , photos etc . The servo isnt cheap if you have to go to rover . I am looking at geting a second hand one , before summer . Not a priority at the min as its brass monkies.
let me know if you cant find the thread.

How timely. I logged on this morning just to post a new thread about how to replace the motors without going through the full landrover dash removal or the complex one suggested on this site. I have a spare working motor by the way!

Basically, the passengers one is really easy. Remove/lower glove box. With very small screwdriver reach around heater duct and you can JUST get to screw to undo the lower one. Screw above is reached with a very long but small screwdriver (I made one) through a tiny hole at the top on the side of the glove box frame. Shine a small light through and you can just get to the screw. Once both are undone, about 20 mins, remove the glove box lock and with a coat hanger pull wire through the lock hole!!!:) Splice new motor in, very easy to do. (Remember to feed wire for new motor from within the dash or you have a motor wired in in the passenger compartment!!!!! I would know!!!! One wire is not used, you will see this on the multiplug of the new motor. I soldered to splice as connectors would not go through lock hole! Then used heat shrink to protect.

Replace as above, but only put lower screw on as top was too fiddly! Really easy, I was well chuffed!

Please note both a landrover garage and a specialist told me that once replaced it would not work and £50 testbook required to calibrate! RUBBISH. Test book light on dash has gone out and works a treat! Trust me... a few bleeding knuckles but very easy! If near Oxford give us a shout for help.

I had to buy the entire heater unit from a breakers yard just to get one servo so have loads of spares, except the passengers side servo.

Sounds like a proper fix !!
I have not actually investigated the exact cause of my fault but it would appear that this servo is prone to failure . am i right in assuming that is what you have replaced on the passenger side ?
From reading the symptoms yours was stuck in the cold mode and mine is stuck in the hot cycle .
Are these servos transferable from side to side or dedicated to each side?

I am interested in the heat shrink you used . A soldered joint is allways better than a crimped one . I have been looking at getting some hellerman sleeves but these could slip . Would you be so kind as to tell me what your heat shrink kit is like.

Lastly if you have a spare servo what would you want for it and to send it to manchester .

Replying does not allow you to see the thread written!!!! so I will have to try to remember what you said...

The servos are not transferable from one side to the other. Mine was stuck on cold, but the replacement I got was set to hot as it happened.

I have sent you a personal message if interested in buying one.

The heat shrink I used was from RS components and shrunk using the soldering iron. I have always used it and am very happy with it. I am happy to send you some if required.

I have put the motors and the whole heater unit on e-bay if anyone wants it! I have taken out passengers side. Please get in touch if anyone needs help fitting... it is really easy!
