Head gasket change, what else needed?

I am starting to loose coolant on my 1.8 '99 Freelander. I was already planning to change the clutch, so my plan now is to take the engine out and do the clutch and the gasket at the same time. Taking the engine out may be overkill, but I'm always in for an extra challenge! :)

Just to be sure I am looking to buy all that I need in advance. I live in Holland and order virtually all parts from the UK, the price difference is extreme! Disadvantage is it can take some days before I get the parts and ordering one part at the time will add up in shipping.

My question is can anyone think of anything I need?
Also which gasket should I use? make/type?

So far I can think of the following:

  • Head Gasket (including complete gasket set)
  • New oil rail for sump
  • Matches & fuel (just to be sure)
  • Timing belt (advised by Haynes)
  • Clutch
  • Pressure plate
  • Clutch release bearing (while I am at it)
  • Waterpump (while I am at it)
  • New exhaust nut studs
Anything else?

Are you sure that its the HG thats causing your coolant loss? OK I know its a Freelander so probably a stupid thing to say but worth checking.

I would use the MLS gasket but only if your liners are above the block surface. Worth also fitting a new timing belt tensioner at the same time.
