Have you told you insurance company about your modifications?

Hi everyone

I just wanted a general idea if anyone on here has told their insurance company about any modifications they've made to their Land Rovers?

My motorcycle insurance allows me to change the rear silencer without having to inform the company but they must be informed if I fit a full exhaust system.
My car insurance will cover a new stereo up to £600 without informing them before hand.
What are insurance companies like about lift kits and snorkels, etc?

my insurance company wanted to know about exhaust, lift, snorkel and any other mods or improvements that have been made to it. i dont know what sort of difference it would make if i did do any of the above or other improvements but always best to let them know, they will try anything to get out of paying out.... an extra few quid could save you thousands if you smash it up

Yep. The policy I have actually welcomes mods (not flux either) weighed in at just over 300 quid fully comp

yup told them about them all, costs me no more so long as its not performance enhancing. ie more bhp.

your daft not to tell them

yep, me too. snorkel, lift kit and bigger tyres changed nothing. With mr flux.

Nope.

But thats because I dont have any mods :D

My last car the previous owner had done a few mods to it, lowered suspension, remapped ECU, some sort of racing clutch, big bore exhaust etc typical boy racer stuff. I didnt declare it to the insurers because for one thing I didnt have any of the details to give them, their website wanted to know stuff like exactly how far the suspension had been lowered, what brand of springs etc, exact code for ECU remap, pressure ratings for the exhause and other weird stuff that I couldnt answer because I didnt know, and was simply more hassle than its worth.

all mods covered when i took out the insurance, so anything i do to it now no need to ring them, that includes a roof tent and rack

Basically don't give them any wriggle room on not paying out on a claim, I've just told mine about alloy wheels and spacers even though they are freestyles I know it didn't have them originally and they probably do to. Better safe than sorry. The truth will set you free.....

I always declare - as has been said do not give the bastards any room to wriggle out of paying up when you need it; just imagine, you are going merrily down the road and some dopey tosser pulls out on you at the last minute, you side beam it causing massive destruction to the little hatchback - your ok because of all the armour ( winch bumper, steering guard etc) BUT the 2 kids in the back are badly hurt and the driver ( who is actually at fault) has been crippled.
now for the bad news, because you didnt inform your insuarnce company of the winch bumper etc, your policy is null and void; YOU are now looking at a world of ****, dont matter that you were not at fault, YOU have no insurance and your world will now fall in.
as I said not worth not informing the insurers, might cost you a few quid more but...

So here''s one for you. a few months ago I brought my defender because it had no mods and and was cheap on insurance. (hi capacity 110 were twice as much WTF?) being 23 insurance is a big issue. It wasn't until changing the timing belt I was told through lz it had a disco 200tdi engine instead of the 19J the logbook suggested. I know for a fact my insurers wouldn't insure me if I declared that that alone putting the price up.

I know I am in the wrong and need to look at a new insurer but had I not found out and had been a oblivious to the noisy bit under the bonnet where would I have stood?

You stand as a driver driving a vehicle which has no insurance and an individual who has a very expensive insurance policy which doesn't actually cover anything.

You're not quite as "in the ****" as actually driving round with no ins. as on police checks it will show cover and no policeman is going to get arsey about engines (well, not at landy level, i suppose a 1 litre micra with a V12 in it is a different matter) but, if you had a bad accident and your ins. company investigated they'd be leaving you in the s**t.

With the 110 the way it is, its not going to be on the road anytime soon. I've just done a quote from Adrian flux. We''ll see what they say when they reply.

i think you would have had one hell of a fight to prove you didnt know and thus have a long and painfull ending

Sometimes the cost can be quite reasonable. Last insurance year I realised that my mileage would be considerably more than the 10,000 I'd originally put, so I asked them what it would cost to have a 14,000 mileage, dreading the result because that's 40% more driving and 40% more risk. However it was only another £45.

I'm sure if the loss adjusters went over most Land Rovers carefully enough they'd find things that were non standard. Even though mine was neglected for the first six years of its life I'm surprised now much Britpart stuff I keep finding every time I take anything apart. Even when I order things by part number they often differ from the item I'm taking off - threads are coarser or finer, bolts have a flange under the head or don't, and so on. I've got my eye on add-ons like an overdrive and LED lights which I'll be telling them about because that alters the vehicle. If I can ever afford them after tackling the day to day repairs that is.
