Went to the plains and played in the mud, got proper dirty and avoided nothing. Driving home had a loss off power every few minutes, put this down to a clogged up rad. Got home and next day paid to have the car cleaned. Went out for a run to the beach yesterday and experienced the same power drop about 20 mins into the journey, power drops then suddenly picks up again. Another thing, maybe connected but also may not, since the plains it does not always turnover first time. Shows all the lights but doesn't even try to fire. Without wanting to sound a complete **** , I am guessing mud in the rad or intercooler and the starter motor clogged up as well
I have changed the oil since the plains trip and the rota & oil filter and this hasnt improved things, not that it should.

Any thoughts?

Could have water, dirt, air or all of these in your fuel. Open the drain tap at the bottom of the fuel filter and see if any water drains out.

Gents, thank you for your replies, they are much appreciated. I haven't yet had chance to have another look at it other than a quick peak at the rad. Remember that I am a mechanical retard so forgive my stupidity. When I look thru the front grill I see the rad or is it the inter cooler? The thing that I see has many damaged fins but is fairly clear of mud and debris. However the thing behind it, which also looks the same as the thing in front is pretty clogged up with mud, I think that this thingamajig may well be the cause of my problems. So what is this item?

It does sound like it's overheating.

intercooler is at the front with the rad behind. You'll need to remove em both and seperate em and then wash em properly.

Is that easy, could a monkey do it?

As long as munkee can lift arms high enough to pull knuckles off floor then yes.

You may want to get yerself a proper hose clip tool or else substitute the plier type hose clips for threaded jubilees. I prefer to use a remote type tool like this...

I've seen something similar used in a film but they weren't cleaning dirty rads. Will a soft brush and water do it (I won't use me hosepipe honest guvnor)

yes. If you have a big enough container you could simply let it soak for a while and then every now and again pour some water over the rad using a jug (cos using a hosepipe would be naughty).

I have been at the rad today with a wire brush and think I have removed the worst of the mud and most of the skin on me knuckles. I have been out for a bit of a drive and so far no reoccurrence. The true test will be next week when I have a 300 mile round trip to see a man about a dog. LandyZone rescue at the ready me hopes.

By what you say, it seems the issue is when the engine has reached operating temperature. I've had similar problems down to loose fitting intercooler pipes from turbo/manifold. I guess your temp is oki etc?

When the problem occurs, one of the symptoms is the temp gauge rising to max temp very quickly and then dropping back down to cold, almost like its possessed. But yes only happens when on a decent run and engine is at optimum temp.
