Had my mechanic sort my oil leak from the handbrake drum today. The seal was pretty warped, can see why it was leaking. He said it looks like a patten part, (picture below) he replaced with genuine landrover part, said it did cost more but some parts are worth the little extra.
He said that he struggled to get the prop shaft off because someone had replaced a UJ joint at some point (at the back?) and they had hammered it on, but wasn't on the splines properly! He heated it up and got it off, cleaned it up and greased and he said it won't be a problem now. I have no idea what he was on about really, as this is pretty new to me.
When I drove it home it had less of a wobble/shake at around 45-50mph, (I used to think this was balance/tracking related) Would this be any way related, to the UJ being wrong, and also why the seal is warped also? It could be all completely unrelated, and in my mind but just wondered what you thought?

its warped because he levered it out by the looks of it, looks like an ok seal to me quality wise,if yokes on rear prop arent in line (phase) you can get some vibration or knottiness, not the same prop but if you look at pic both yokes need to be aligned as it

Not sure what he means by "wasn't on the splines properly". The two half of the prop can be put together in any phase but as james said, the correct phase is as he has shown. Although fitted wrong, they will still slide in and out ok. If driven while in the wrong phase has damaged the splines and heat was needed to separate them, then simply greasing them and putting them back together will not do.

I wonder if he meant the UJ had been hammered in. If it was fitted off centre, it could certainly give you lots of horrible vibration.

Mine def has one wide 'key' spline which will only fit in one place (in the matching wide slot!) so idiot proof - just as well with me anywhere near it.... A

and could well explain the seal failure and oil leak

Yes I think he meant the the UJ was hammered on. Im sorry if I wasnt clear in my description, im not sure what it all lookslike under there, let alone how it all works, and couldnt exactly remember everything he told me when he brought the car back, he does like to talk!
But after a few days of driving it, there is definately less vibrations around the 45mph+, and I have read on here about people asking about vibrations and being told to check shafts and UJs etc. So what ever it was he sorted out it has improved the drive, and I now dont roll away down hills.

They should only fit together one way but if you try really hard you can get it part way on........and then spend a good twenty sweaty minutes pulling them apart again :(
