I have a 99 disco II, and the Handbrake warning light keeps coming on while driving. The handbrake is full down and it only goes off when there is a bump in the road or a change of pitch to the car (up or down hills).

I have read there might be a connection on the side of the handbrake that if loose tapping can turn the light on and off but this is not happening im my case. From what i have read it could be a loose connection behined the center column or something. Does anyone know if this is a DIY job and if so where i can get the information on what goes where and how to instructions online?

Thanks very much

Ewen

There's a bar across the top of the handbrake lever that activates a switch; on mine the bar had snapped so nothing was hitting the switch even when the brake was taken off. When I rewelded the bar I found the switch was badly worn on one side so it wasn't even making contact. A new switch was very cheap and cured it instantly. You can check by removing the centre console.

the switch thing is a common issue but be advised this lamp is not just handbrake warning lamp, it is there to warn :
1. low brake fluid level,
2. handbrake on
3. brake control system failure affecting EBD.

so before u remove the console listen to jamesmartin and check the fluid level first.
