Ok, does someone have a howto, on fitting a handbrake cable? As i've done something wrong, but i can't work out what?

It just doesn't seem to be working or tightening up. Frustrated now.

(300tdi - 1994)

Mechanism seems fine to me, i took apart the drum, fitted new cable in, ran it up to the brake lever, connected that, but it just doesn't seem to be pulling it tight, well actually it's not pulling it at all. (By pulling it tight, i mean its not stopping the car)

Could be that, but maybe I'm doing it wrong? I've just been trying to adjust it, using the bolt on the back of the drum, but I notice 0 difference if I tighten it or loosen it all the way.

adjust the slack in the cable! fit cable and poke it thru tunnel into cubby box - then fit plastic collar and slide over top clip then attach to hand brake lever. give a few pulls to get everything home and then adjust drum shoes. after youve done that and your cable still feels crap turn the black plastic collar on the cable to take out any slack (keep turning it is making the cable outter longer) job jobbed!

how many turns are you putting on adjuster bolt clockwise is tightening

Umm, I turned it until it wouldn't turn anymore. And loosed it till it came out. I'm thinking I've done something wrong!

Those brake retention springs, come to think of it, I didn't fit them back in. Would that be the problem? What's the best way to put them on by the way, as they were hard enough to take off lol

Lol, I didn't take pics, but I know where the springs go, and I can see which way they twist :)

What's their use Btw? Just told hold it together? (Still don't know if it's going to fix it?) :(

yes they just hold shoes in place other wise they could twist and jam drum ,adjuster has 2 metal shoes that adjuster bolt pushes apart and shoes slot in to

The shoes are slotted into that (though mine looks alot dirtier haha).

Sily question. How does tightening that bolt push them further apart? Does it not have anything to do with the width of the bolt that'd push them out?

ere ya go.....

Love you right now, if you have it open! :D

Question, at the bottom of the shoe, if you pull them apart, theres like a ridge, does it go over them, or on them?

Second question, the handbrake cable, that does just slot into the gap yeh? (Inside the shoe)

Thankyou :D
