Folks,
Just replaced rear nearside wheel bearing that was completely shot on my RRC (same as disco 1 but thought I'd post here...more likely to get a useful answer ;) )
Since doing that I've been hearing an occasional rattling/ting noise....defo sounds like the half shaft.
I've just bought a replacement halfshaft....waiting for delivery. 10 splines looked fine on the old one I put back in....
just thinking and asking before I get the replacment, has anyone else experienced this and what are peoples thoughts?

cheers
Joe

I'm assuming the halfshaft took a battering when running it with a shot wheel bearing.
Wondering if anything else in the axle or diff might have taken a hit too??

Depends how bad the bearing was joe. Shafts will bend and spring back, but the diff centre might have gotten worn but I'd find that EXTREMELY unlikely, there no way a tiny movement at the stub axle could make more than a few thou of difference at the diff end.

As long as the shaft is straight and there's no evidence of contact on the stub axle, it couldbe a worn diff, but I wouldn't expect any noise under load from planet gear play. Diff bearings would make a grumble if worn so it ain't that.

Could it be something simple like a brake pad rattling/catching? Have you put the seals in the right way?

I've got shafts here mate you know!

cheers matey ;)

Yeah, I'm REALLY thinking the shaft took a battering as the bearing/ broken bits I took out really had had it!....There was very little movement UNTIL I undid and slide out the half shaft... To put it into perspective, the inner race on the inner bearing that needed to be tapped/knocked along and off the stub axle looked like it had a rubber seal ahead of it. Thought it a weird way of doing it until it took me a minute to realise it wasn't a rubber seal, it was actually a ring of friggin compacted CLAY!!!
I shouldn't have left it as long to replace, and only did cos didn't suspect it was as bad as it clearly was.
In my haste to get all the bearings done I did check the splines on the long half shaft, a bit worn but not damaged...but I didn't actually check the straightness of it...

It's defo the n/s long half shaft thats making the noise tho...sounded like a bitch on the run home today.

I'm gonna have a look at it tommorroz.... It probably may not have helped that I didn't use a flange gasket either, maybe? (which turned up in the post today)

but what I needed to hear was that it's unlikely I've fooked the diff...so thanks for that :)

Confirmed...The long half shaft is very slightly banana shaped, and on close inspection the 10 spline end has actually twisted very very slightly!! (I shouldve done the bearing replacement in better light...wouldve spotted it first time!)
still...rather the half shaft as the part that gives than the diff I guess.

Lets hope Parcel Farce aren't bashing the crap outta the replacement on it's way! ;)

If they manage to bend the shaft in transit they deserve a badge!! :D

I'm hoping the seller doesn't parcel it up with 'fragile' tape. It's commonly known knowledge that anything with that stuff on it is abused by courier companies nightshift staff! terrible stuff to use:rolleyes:
