Got my 90 yesterday and parked on my drive overnight, now it wont start. The starter tries to turn a wee bit, then fuse box clicks like mad?? Tried jumping but no luck, and all lights are working fine so dont think its battery. My drive is quite sloped so i wondered if no diesel was getting to the engine but i rolled it onto the road but still no. then i thought the starter isnt turning properly anyway so i doubt its that :( any ideas?

Flat battery, dont use them cheap flimsey jump leads as they no start it. try putting your battery on charge. when you have got it started get you battery and alternator checked out.

Battery - these things don't just jump start like a car - they need LOTS of amps.

Stick the battery on a slow charge for a night and see if that gets it started - then see if it looses all it's charge again before getting a new one - and make sure the alternator is working.

But he has only had it 24hrs - they sold it with a dudd battery - get them to fix it.

Was from ebay :( they have sold me a dud battery but i can't be bothered with the hassle. Is it a 24v or 12v battery? The starter doesnt turn now and the clicking from the fuse box has stopped! the bonnet cable doesnt release the bonnet so i cant get in there to smash the starter with a hammer! i could remove the grill and front panel but the spots are right up against the grill on the A bar! The lights are all working fine so would;nt that suggest the battery is ok, especially seeing as i tried jumping it!?

Hi there, I may be totally wrong in saying this but it may be your starter motor. If the folk you bought it off had the engine warm before you arrived that's why it started ( because it's easier for the starter to rotate a warm engine) so after you left it over night obviously the engine coold down which makes it harder to turn over. I had the same problem with mine. First thing in the morning it took 15 mins to get it started and just before I changed it, it rotated once then made the clicking noise. If it was your battery and it didn't start from jump starting then that makes me think it is your starter.

By the way, it's 12volt.

Thanks but the engine definitely wasn't hot as the 90 came 300 miles on the back of a truck. Started perfect for the first day. Then left overnight and this morning it turned a bit and clicked furiously at the fuse box, tried jumping it and didn't work. Then after more trying the starter wouldnt turn at all just all the clicks, and now it doesnt even click :( im calling out my mums breakdown cover tommorow morning, think it is covered on that) if anyones got any more advice would be appreciated. So annoying as i cant get into the bonnet either!

charge the battery up and disconnect it, leave it overnight, connect it next day if it still starts i would say your alternator is ****ed :D

I agree with D.G.F.S could be starter. This sounds just like the last time mine failed, we had spent the whole day out and about stopping starting etc. Next day click that was all.
Check the following:
Charge and check battery, check wire connection point all good inc earth point on engine.
Took starter out put a set of jump leads on it a feed to the spade terminal, click.

They do fail, done mine twice now, once on the TD engine, thats nice and easy.
Once on the TDi, thats a pig cos the low disco turbo gets in the way.

That's a point Motiztab, the engine earth lead may be corroded. My mate has a 1986 90 with a 200 tdi fitted but he began to have starting problems.
He bought 2 new batteries ,tried jump starting, checked all connections etc. After a while he read somthing which said the earth could be corroded. He connected the negative jump lead from the engine lifting eye to battery negative and it started first turn. He found the earth cable jently pulled it and it came off with a cloud of rust. Maby it's worth doing that with the jump lead?

Firstly I would.

Check the battery terminals are tight and not covered in corrosion. If they are not tight this can cause this problem.

Check battery voltage: Enter the results here:

If the voltage is below 12.5 I would charge the battery with the vehicle wires disconnected.

If the voltage is above 12.5v then put a jump lead from the battery -ve to a part in the engine bay that is out of anything moving (I usually use the thermostat housing).

Try to start If it starts easily. Its a bad earth problem which needs sorting.

If it contnues to click or whatever it is now doing check your +ve cable is conneceted securley to the starter motor. If this is ok then,

Check the solonoid wire that goes to the starter. you will need to meter this while you try and start it (get somone to help).

If this recieves power when you turn the key to crank then the starter is fooked. If you do not get a voltage when you turn the key your fault lies between the key switch all associated wiring to the solonoid.

Quite likley because the clicking noise you say sounds like the solonoid being thrown but not connecting the power to the motor to turn. (this is a common problem an internal fault in the starter motor)

Dont jump to the bottom Do the checks and get a confirmed result otherwise you could be spending out loads on thing its could be. Jai

12.5 isnt a good voltage either. Ans as you are unsure weather its 12 or 24v you need to work out what it is firstly. assuming its a 12v system 12.5 volts is still low when running with the alternator working it should kick out about 14.2 volts Jai
