A transit van drove past my 11-plate RR Sport in Stockport yesterday and snapped off the cover of my nearside door mirror - can't be expensive I thought! When I called the local main dealer, Guy Salmon in Stockport, I was astonished to be told it would cost around 300.00 because it "comes as a complete unit" - the piece of plastic concerned couldn't have cost more than a tenner.

Suspicious, I called other main dealers in the Manchester area who told me Guy Salmon were having me "over", the rear cover for the door mirror was available at about thirty quid, they told me, add another thirty quid if it needed paining - but even that was no where near the three hundred pounds Guy Salmon wanted to charge initially.

When I confronted Guy Salmon they seemed embarrassed and although I asked for Stephen Ottley the Dealer Principal to return my calls he did not do so. Is this run of the mill? Were they trying to rip me off or was it just incompetence?

With a main dealer I expected, honesty, integrity, transparency and most of all knowledge about what parts are available and what aren't; perhaps I expected too much!

I know main dealers (stealers lol) are expensive, but naively I expected integrity and knowledge - I did not expect to be ripped off for hundreds of pounds by Guy Salmon Stockport - in telling me a door mirror cover was not available separately, they stretched disingenuousness to the very edge of dishonesty - and some would say beyond it..

Take it to the top as that like you say is just dishonesty as they have all the info on computer. You may even get the part for free for your trouble

complain direct to LR... I did this with a Ford dealer once and within about 3 hours had a phone call from the manager, free carpets, a cheque for £50 and a lot of apologises from them.

Complaining works! I've just put the mrs polo in for some warranty replacement front wings and they only wanted to stump up 70% of the repair cost so I raised a case with Vw uk pointing out it was their design flaw causing the corrosion and waited for the answer I wanted. Two weeks later I get a phone call from the dealer saying Vw will pay 100% and when would I like to book it in and I can have a discount on the scratched bumper I wanted repairing :D

My father in law bought an XF jag, within 3 months, it had been back to the dealer for about 8 weeks, complained to the dealer, they just said sorry for the trouble etc etc,and off he went with his car, he then phoned the jag office, who were very apologetic, and said let me get back to you, his compensation? A new model of higher spec!

You just have to complain loudly enough.

It's taken me the last 2 weeks, but, finally got a furniture delivery company to admit they owe us some form of compensation, i escalated it up 4 managers before i got to the one i needed to (why they need so many managers i'll never know)

Send a letter to Stephen Ottley and at the top of the letter make it look like you sent a copy to your local newspaper.Bet they sit up and take notice.

Stephen Ottley claims to have left two messages for me but there is nothing on my phone. I will take it to the top of Land Rover because it is dishonesty at the end of the day and I will not stand for it - they have all the information and they tried to rip me off.

Guy Salmon are part of the Sytner group I think so I'll let them know about it too.

Did the dealer actually see the car or just give a price of what you described over the phone? Normally the painted mirror cap on the front of the mirror is available on its own (as you've found out), but if their is a black ring around the glass that the cover clips into this is normally part of the mirror assembly (which I imagine is about 300quid for a RR like you said) stranger things have happened than a slightly dim parts advisor misunderstanding and pricing the wrong part from what you describe over the phone. If that's the case i think it was just human error and LR would tell you to leg it over getting Mis-quoted the price of part. God does lover a tryer though so the best of luck to you. (that is of course providing they never actually looked at the car then quoted you)

That is the sort of customer service that all retailers should aspire to

2 years ago I bought a £1200 leather suite from Costco , the colour in the leather faded but the manufacturers warranty only covered the leather for 12 months so I didn't do anything about it.

Then the handle on the side snapped off so I rang Costco , bring it back, no questions, I pointed out I'd have an odd sofa then, no problem, bring that back as we'll

I took them back and got a full refund , what that means if if Costco sell it, I'm buying it there because I know their customer service is top notch

To the OP you should take this as high as you can, start at he top, the MD of the company should be interested in how his business is being run

main dealers are probably more dishonest than the dirtiest side street garage bacause they can be as youre forced to use them

as it happens, Costco are the mutts for returns, don't even need a receipt cos they can check on the computer if you bought it from them.

Last year our tv went wrong, lost the bottom half of the picture. An anal half hour on the phone with some yank doing some checks concluded it was donald, as I'd explained at the start of the conversation.

had it collected for repair, then returned as unrepairable, took it back to the warehouse, weighed me out in cash there and then.

They had none in stock, so went to Comet, saved myself £100 and ended up with a bigger tv.
