Hi all,

I'll keep this brief if I can apologies if not!

I am in the market for a RR. I am going to look into other brands too, but my heart is kind of set on a RR. The first car I've been looking seriously into is a Range Rover Evoque. Due to my budget this would have to be a used one. Let me just say for the record I am well aware of the so called reliability issues and the issue with thefts in certain areas of the UK at the minute causing huge insurance spikes across the UK.

I have read a ton of comments and online posts from owners who have had their vehicles stolen, those who have had nothing but issues with their RR. I get it, I understand completely why people would say AVOID. With all due respect, these things are usually blown way out of proportion, those who have perfectly fine RR's or those who have RR's with minimal issues are far less likely to post negative things on forums and so on. Where I live, theft is not really a concern and is not common. The main concern for me, would be insurance. Having tried a few quotes, it's basically double what my current insurance is, which compared to some quotes I've seen online in other areas and some can't get insured at all, isn't that bad. Although still a blatant rip off of course (until I need it! ha)

I have found a 17 plate RR Evoque TD3 HSE Dynamic with excellent mileage (35k) roughly done about 4/5k per year. It has full dealership service history at the correct intervals. I went to view the car yesterday but the dealership was closed but I still managed to get a look around the car as it sat in the lot. Condition it looks excellent and barely touched on the inside, the physical condition of the exterior was great also. Tyres all looked great and new. No obvious scratches/scuffs or dents etc. I've done a full background check on CarVertical and all is well.

Having never owned a RR, I would like to know what I should be looking out for here, what questions to ask the dealer etc. Anything I should be specifically looking at on the car itself when test driving or viewing?

I am kinda set on a RR but I could be swayed. I love the shape of the Evoque, and whilst I appreciate it may not be everyone's favourite or cup of tea. It's the one that is appealing to me the most at the minute.

Thanks.

Evoque is basically freelander 3. Not many on here run them, @Nodge68 might be able to advise

Guessing its Td4, I don't know if a 2017 would still have the PSA diesel or the JLR Ingenium. The ingenium diesel should be avoided. Hope someone can help more

First off, it's an RR in name only, it's actually a Discovery Sport in a less practical body style.
Unfortunately it will likely have the ingenium engine, which is proving to be far from reliable, suffering from serious faults like bearing failure, cam failure, and lots of other issues related to fuel diluting the already thin 5w20 oil.
Best advice is have the oil changed at least twice as often as LR suggests, then it might last long enough to make it a worthwhile purchase.

Can't resist

Thanks Nodge.

Would I be better off just going for a Disco Sport in that case? Or is it same engine = same problems.

Okay thank you. Noted.

To be honest, it's look more unaffordable anyway.

Cheapest insurance quote I can get is £2.5k a year for an Evoque, nevermind any other RR/LR. It's a shame, that's what is probably going to put me off the most. Maybe one day I'll be able to own a LR/RR. :(

P38 of mine £283 per year

As you say the problem cars turn up on forums. However, take a look at reports like the J D Power survey. You will see that Range Rover products are always near the bottom of the reliability tables and that's when they are fairly new.

Yeah, I've decided against it.

I think if I was to go for it, I'd go for an older model. I'm doing some research on them just now.

You can get a decent Freelander 2 with the correct engine and bigger space. Instead of an Evoque if you are wanting it for the badge then it's your call.
