By the look of things I need to replace my autobox.

I'm intending to write this up as I go along, with the idea that I may gain some knowledgable pointers in the process

So, this evening I got it up on stands:

Will be working on my own and on gravel so don't think its going to be easy!
Am planning to lay a big sheet of ply over the stones under the disco when it comes to swapping the box.

Shall keep my eye of for a replacement autobox on the likes of eBay (hopefully with some warranty) if I can get something sent to my place of work I shouldn't have problems getting it on a pallet and use of a van to get it home.

First for the shopping list is an engine crane, and a way of manouvering it from back of a van to under the disco..

Wish you the very best! been following all your trials and tribulations (what the hell are tribulations?) with interest. Not applicable to me at all cos I have a manual but I admire your enthusiasm and think your adventures will no doubt be useful to other owners. I'm sure you'll find a box - 21 months ago my manual box broke and I found a box in Essex whilst I was in Pembrokeshire 5 days before emigrating to Spain via Disco and 2 days before Xmas day. The box was couriered to me on Xmas day morning, arriving at about 3.30am (ho ho ho!) and fitted by 3 blokes in a barn on Boxing day who finished at about midnight and we made our ferry crossing on the 28th Dec. There's always a way, keep the faith!

ps Just read that thru - No, the three blokes weren't that wise but it was Wales so thay could have been shepherds! Xmas, barn, prob a manger there somewhere And I'm a virgin......

Luckily(?) we were supposed to be taking the disco for a 2 week tour around Spain and France setting off in 2weeks time, but I thought it best to cancel the ferry to Santander a short while back. Hopefully next year..

Good luck with the 'box change Graham, it may be a good idea to put some thick ply squares under your axle stands to spread the load on the gravel, you dont want a stand leaning over at the wrong moment !.

When you are changing the box remember that the torque conerter will be full of oil and weigh a fair amount.

I don't know if you have to remove the torque converter on a Disco but I thought I'd warn you just in case

I could pop in for some lending of pointers.

I've got a bag full of pointers lying around, cos I just changed the manual box on mine last week, so I got loads of pointers going spare

Obv mine is a petrol manual 200, but hey, gotta be similar!

Yep, planning on removing autobox, TC and trans box as one unit - can anyone guesstimate what that would weigh? More than 80kg? If not, then hopefully I can get someone to help me monouver it to underneat the disco by hand

Hire or buy a hoist. You will find it a great boon when removing and re-fitting the gearbox.

Got off to a slow start but anythings progress..

Disconnected battery, top hoses and kickdown cable from throttle bracket:

Removed air intake pipe and turbo hose to get access to starter motor:

removed starter motor, the furthest bolt away is a begger to get access to due to the solenoid. Front two were okay, the nuts underneath are 15mm found it easiest to lock them with a breaker from underneath.

disconnected front exhaust and drained fluids from autobox and tranny:

disconnected gearbox dipstick tube and feed pipe to oil cooler:

stuck it in low range and removed tbox trim

that's it, as I said slow start but better than nowt!

As above, I don't mind popping in to talk about technique etc, and yes it is a heavy bastard, I borrowed an engine lift for mine.

I'm afraid I can't really stick around and get involved too much cos I'm mega busy on my truck, BUT if you're close enough it's no worries to shoot over and lie underneath and explain what's what, and basically how easy it is to remove the box on a disco!

Let me know, we'll sort something out

Got back late from work but managed an hour under the disco
Disconnected handbrake cable and removed centre console:

Removed gear selector unit, 4 bolts holding it on along with the bracket on gearbox mount and splitpin where it connects to the box:

drilled out the rivets which hold down the plastic cover

removed front exhaust, needed to drop the front arb (4 x 17mm bolts) and move power steering reservoir as couldn't raise the suspension what with it already being on stands

that's it for this evening, slowly catch the monkey n'all that!
Couple of questions, should this be connected to anything or is it a 'give-away':

I guess an oil seal needs sorting within the handbrake assembly?

I got one just like that, cant see why it comes out there and through the brake drum??

Why cant landrovers keep their fluids under control
