Autobox not changing

Suprise suprise I got more problems!!
After getting tax have had a good weekend of driving and ferrying people to/from oulten park with no problems - that was until yesterday when I thought I'd put a bit more pressure on the accelorator when on the motorway.

Suddenly it moved a further inch or so to the floor, but now the autobox won't change gear as it did (at approx 3,200 rpm), the only way it will move up the gears is when the discos moving fast enough I.e when going down a steep hill.

Any ideas? I did feel particularly stupid driving most the way home at 20mph in first with a train of cars behind me!!

Two things:

1. Check the autobox oil level, with the engine running &

2. Sounds like you have a issue with the kick-down mechanism.

Thanks biglad, oil looks okay and all looks connected under the bonnet.

There's some play in the cable but I seem to recall it was always like that.
Had a go at adjusting the screw but that just seemed to alter accelerator pedal travel:

I can pull the cable from where it leaves the bulkhead but it all seams connected there:

if I follow the cable towards the autobox it seems to enter at the top. Help!!

I wonder if the kickdown mechanism is set too tight.

Try winding the adjusters so that there is plenty of slack and see if that makes a difference.

Check under the accelerator pedal to see if there is anything amiss there.

Hi, I tried slackening the adjusters but that just resulted in reduced accelerator pedal travel.
I can't see much under the pedal as most of the mechanics are pretty high up, although can see the cable is connected!

Can anyone pls tell me where the kickdown assembly is located on the gearbox and how I get access to it??

Thanks sierraferry unfortunately that be the bit in the engine bay which I've already looked at. I read somewhere that thd cable can come off the cam in the gearbox mechanism. Haynes has no diagram and states take to dealer

Does noobody have experience with a 300tdi autobox??
I really don't want to take it to a garage after getting this far with a 2 year restoration job on me own!!!
Any help really would be appreciated

If you floor it, will it change up? I had a similar problem when I fitted another autobox. All it was the adustment need slackening off.

Nope it keeps revving with no gear changing and Ive been too scared to take it above approx 4500!
Something definitely moved (felt like it had snapped) and the pedal now goes an inch or so closer to the floor not like it used to.

Hi smurphy Im not too far from Chester, am not very hopefull!!

My only thought now is to remove the centre console unit and gear selector trim, maybe I can get access that way??

does it work in manual mode - 1 or 2 etc???

kickdown cable wont stop it changing up / down, only affects kickdown.

if it wont change at all it suggests pump failure or valve block problems.

didnt think there was a manual mode on the disco only the rr. always thought 1-2-3 would start in first but then change up (or maybe thats other autos)

AFIK, if you stuff it in 1 it will stay in 1 until you change to D or 2 - 3 yourself.

Thanks for the replys.
If I drive it in 1,2,3 or D it won't change up from first gear even at revs above 4K rpm.
The only time it will jump up to next gear is when I'm going down a particularly steep hill so I guess the autobox is also operated by speed (not just rpm).
