Trying to indentify the source of a gearbox oil leak. It appears to be coming from the 'main gearbox extension housing' (as identified in the Haynes book)- the area betweent he gearbox and the transfer box. Are there any breathers/drain holes/preassure release valves in this area?

Ill try and get a picture tommorow to show were its coming from.

I know its not due to excess as i changed the oil last weekend after it frist started leaking. Only got about 2 litres out (haynes says 2.6)

Cheers
Chris

which gear box ,lt77 and r380 have breather banjo bolt drivers side top extension case usually runs down from top ,look for obvious leak as the joints can be damp without causing noticable loss or problem

Sorry forgot to mention, its an r380 box
I know what hole the oil is comming from, just dont know what the hole is for.
The hole is the furthest one back before the transfer box and very close to the joint between the two, on the underside, and seems to have a brass insert (?) from what i can remember.

Cheers
Chris

P.s. Has anyone got an electronic copy of the gearbox manual i can have a look at to try and track down the reason for the leak?

there is or not as standard any brass inserts in r380 gear box , there is 3 x cast lugs with 8mm holes which are to fasten mount to if fitted in other vehicles but they shouldnt go through case

The hole is near these, slightly further back towards t box, i can only find pictures of this area for lt77 boxes and those pics show a plug as (according to haynes book) apparently there is a drain plug here, but i cant find pics for r380 box

Gunna go and see if camera will take a decent picture in the dark

Cheers

there is no drain bung there ,thats the filter plug on lt77 ,i think what you mean now is the closure for oil feed drilling from pump to pick up ring on main shaft ,ive never seen one leak from there as far as i can remember, are you sure its not running down fro between boxes or further up,if it is that pipe closure i would drill and tap it and fit bolt with washer

Heres a pic (hopefully) showing where it is, when i wipe it clean it can be seen slowly seeping back, but it is from there

Cheers for your help
Chris

would drilling/tapping and plugging this hole have any effect? what is it actully for?

Thanks again for your help

Chris

is it just a steel insert then i take it? so it should be easy to drill and tap just don't want to go through and damage something important.

cheers chris

Should i drill and tap the insert, or the ali box itself, gunna be a week before i can do it so ive got plenty of time to worry about the box destroying itself :(

Thanks for your help

Chris
